Tuition (Austrian public universities, non-EU students)
Austria offers an interesting middle-ground in European higher education for Indian students — public university tuition at approximately EUR 726.72 per semester for non-EU students (significantly cheaper than Western Europe averages, slightly higher than Germany's near-zero model), with strong programmes in business, music, medicine, and the social sciences. The University of Vienna is the oldest university in the German-speaking world; the WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) is one of the top continental European business schools; the Technical University of Vienna is a credible engineering destination; the University of Graz, University of Innsbruck, University of Salzburg, JKU Linz are all reputable.
Beyond tuition affordability, Austria offers an English-medium programme catalogue at Masters level that is broader than commonly realised. WU's English Masters in International Business, Finance, and Strategy are competitive globally; TU Vienna's English Masters in Computer Science, Engineering, and Architecture draw international applicants. The University of Vienna has English-medium programmes across humanities, sciences, and social sciences.
The trade-off is that Austria has a relatively strict residence-registration timeline (Meldebestätigung within 3 days of arrival) and the visa process expects thorough financial documentation. We brief Indian students on the on-arrival checklist before departure.
Austria's higher education has three pillars:
Austrian universities have substantially expanded their English-medium programme offering, particularly at Masters level. WU Vienna's English-medium Masters in International Business, Strategy, Finance, Marketing, and the prestigious Master in International Management/CEMS attract significant Indian application volume. TU Vienna's English Masters in Computer Science, Engineering, and Architecture are strong. The University of Vienna has English-medium programmes in physics, mathematics, environmental sciences, and select humanities areas.
For undergraduate study in English, options are narrower — most Austrian public undergraduate programmes are German-medium and expect B2 German evidenced by Universitätssprachprüfung, ÖSD-B2, or comparable. Private universities (Webster Vienna, Modul) offer full English-medium undergraduate degrees affiliated with international institutions.
The Austrian long-stay D visa is the visa category for studies lasting more than 90 days. It is submitted at VFS Austria in Delhi or Mumbai.
Required documents centre on the Aufnahmebescheid (admission letter), financial proof (around EUR 715/month for under-24s, EUR 1,295/month for 24+), health insurance, accommodation evidence, language proficiency appropriate to the programme, police clearance certificate, and a motivation letter. The visa takes typically 4-12 weeks from submission.
After arrival on the D visa, you must complete your Meldebestätigung (residence registration) within 3 days at the local municipal office (Meldeamt in Vienna; comparable elsewhere). This is shorter than Germany's 14-day rule and is enforced — late registration attracts fines.
The Meldebestätigung is mandatory for the next step: applying for the Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierender (residence permit for students) at the local immigration authority (MA 35 in Vienna, the equivalent regional office in other cities). The residence permit is valid for one year and renewed annually with proof of continued study.
Austrian public university tuition for non-EU students is EUR 726.72 per semester (2024-25 indicative), plus a Student Union fee of approximately EUR 22 per semester. Total tuition for a Bachelor (3 years / 6 semesters) is approximately EUR 4,500 + fees; for a Masters (2 years / 4 semesters), approximately EUR 3,000 + fees.
Private universities — Webster Vienna, Modul University, Lauder Business School — charge EUR 6,000-25,000/year, in line with international private-university norms.
Living costs vary by city. Vienna is the most expensive Austrian student city — total monthly living costs (rent, food, transport, books) typically EUR 950-1,300/month. Graz, Innsbruck, Linz, Salzburg are significantly more affordable at EUR 750-1,000/month. Student accommodation in Vienna ranges EUR 400-700/month in student dormitories or shared apartments.
