How SkillSelect works in plain language

Points open the door — invitations decide who walks through.

Eligibility floor

65 points is the minimum eligibility threshold for Subclass 189. Submitting an EOI below this is not allowed.

Invitation cutoffs

Recent monthly invitation rounds have called scores well above 65 in many occupations. The realistic target is what is actually being invited in your occupation right now — not the eligibility floor.

State nomination

A 190 nomination adds 5 points and ties you to a state. A 491 regional nomination adds 15 points and effectively guarantees an invitation in most cycles, with a 5-year provisional visa leading to permanent residence via Subclass 191.
