Turkey is one of the most rewarding destinations within easy reach of India — a country that straddles Europe and Asia, with the historic skyline of Istanbul, the fairy chimneys and hot-air balloons of Cappadocia, the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale, and the turquoise Mediterranean coast around Antalya and Bodrum. For Indian families, couples and first-time long-haul travellers, it packs an enormous amount of history, food and scenery into a single trip.
Indian passport holders do need a visa to enter Turkey. There is no visa-free entry and no general visa-on-arrival for Indian citizens. Which visa you apply for depends entirely on one thing: whether you already hold a valid Schengen, USA, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit.
This page explains both routes — who can use the online e-Visa and who must apply for a consular sticker visa — along with the documents, process, costs and the practical tips that keep an Indian application clean.
The two Turkey visa routes for Indians
There are two distinct paths, and it is important to know which one applies to you before you spend any money:
- The e-Visa route (online). If you hold a valid (used or unused) Schengen, USA, UK or Ireland visa, or a residence permit from one of those, you can apply for the Turkey e-Visa on the official portal. It is a single-entry e-Visa allowing a stay of up to 30 days, and it is valid for 180 days from the date you specify. This is the quick, online route — no embassy visit.
- The sticker (consular) visa route. If you do not hold a qualifying third-country visa, you cannot use the e-Visa. You must apply for a sticker visa through the Turkish mission, handled in India via the authorised visa application centre (VFS). This is a document-led application lodged in person, with biometrics where required.

Who needs a Turkey visa
All Indian passport holders travelling to Turkey for tourism, visiting family or short business need a visa. The right type — e-Visa or sticker — depends on your qualifying third-country visa as described above. For a genuine holiday, family visit or business trip, plan on one of these two visitor routes; do not rely on transit shortcuts for an actual visit.
What a Turkey visa application involves
Whichever route applies, a typical Indian application is built around:
- A passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates (Turkey requires at least 60 days' validity beyond the visa's expiry; six months is the safe standard), with blank pages.
- A recent colour photograph to specification (biometric, white background).
- Return / onward flight reservations and confirmed hotel or accommodation bookings for the trip.
- Proof of funds and ties to India — bank statements, salary slips or ITR, employment or business proof — to satisfy the genuine-visitor test.
- A cover letter setting out your travel plan, and travel medical insurance (recommended; sometimes requested on the sticker route).
- For the e-Visa route only: the valid qualifying third-country visa or residence permit (Schengen, USA, UK or Ireland) that makes you eligible.

Turkey visa costs — what to budget
Most Indian applicants take the sticker visa, where the government fees total about ₹18,120 (3-month single entry) or ₹20,240 (6-month) — that is the bulk of your visa spend. Holders of a valid Schengen, USA, UK or Ireland visa can instead use the much cheaper online e-Visa. Beyond the visa, budget for flights and hotels. Figures below are approximate; confirm at filing, as government fees move with policy and exchange rates.
| Cost | Approx amount | Who you pay | |---|---|---| | e-Visa (only if you hold a valid Schengen/US/UK/Ireland visa) | Approx USD 43 (≈ ₹3,600) per applicant | Official e-Visa portal | | Sticker visa fee + appointment fee | ₹5,400 + ₹12,720 (3-mo) / ₹14,840 (6-mo) = ₹18,120 / ₹20,240 total | Turkish appointment system | | VFS / service-centre handling (sticker route) | INR 1,500 – 3,500 | VFS Global | | Photographs (biometric spec) | INR 300 – 600 | Local studio | | Lifeset Overseas service fee | from ₹5,999 all-in | Us — 18% GST included; embassy/VFS fees separate, at cost |
Our from ₹5,999 all-in fee (18% GST included) covers the full preparation and lodging of your visitor-visa application on whichever route applies. Government, VFS and consular fees are passed through at cost — we do not mark them up.
Turkey visa processing times
| Route | Typical processing | Note | |---|---|---| | e-Visa (online) | Minutes to a few hours, sometimes up to 24 hours | For holders of a qualifying Schengen/US/UK/Ireland visa | | Sticker visa (consular via VFS) | Around 1 – 3 weeks; can be longer in peak season | Document-led; allow a buffer |
Apply well ahead of travel on the sticker route — at least three to four weeks. The e-Visa is usually fast, but do not leave it to the airport: apply a few days before you fly so any issue can be fixed calmly.
Where Indian travellers go in Turkey
Most first trips centre on Istanbul (Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, a Bosphorus cruise), Cappadocia (hot-air balloons, cave hotels, the Göreme valleys), Pamukkale (the white travertine terraces and ancient Hierapolis), and the Mediterranean coast around Antalya for beaches and resorts. Turkey is also a strong value destination — accommodation, food and internal flights are reasonably priced, and the country is well set up for tourism.
The Indian connection
Turkish food is famously vegetarian-friendly in parts — mezes, breads, salads and dairy feature heavily — and Indian restaurants are available in Istanbul and the main resort areas. There are direct flights from several Indian metros, and the time difference is small. The best seasons are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October), when the weather is mild for sightseeing; summers are hot on the coast and winters can be cold inland in Cappadocia.
