Germany visas, built right for Indian applicants.
Germany is a Schengen country. Tourism, business, family visits and short research, cultural or medical stays use the Schengen Type C visa. Applications from the Delhi jurisdiction are completed on the VIDEX portal, submitted through VFS Global and decided by the German mission. We build the file to the German checklist so nothing is missing.

Germany is the destination for the student who wants a world-class degree without a world-class loan. At most public universities, tuition is little or nothing — even for international students — so the real cost of a German education is living expenses, not fees. For engineering, the sciences, computing and research, few countries offer that combination of quality and affordability.
Germany is also Europe's largest economy, with a deep, sustained demand for skilled graduates. After your degree, an 18-month residence permit lets you stay and look for work in your field. From there, the EU Blue Card and skilled-worker routes lead toward settlement — and Germany's settlement permit, the Niederlassungserlaubnis, is a genuine, well-defined pathway.
Many master's programmes are taught entirely in English, which makes Germany accessible to Indian students from day one. But daily life, paperwork and most jobs still run in German, so learning the language is not optional for a long-term plan — it is the difference between visiting Germany and building a life there.
For Indian families, Germany's community is newer and smaller than those in Canada or the UK, but it is growing fast, especially among students and young professionals in Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt. Indian groceries and restaurants are easy to find in the larger cities.
The honest counterweights: the German language is a real barrier you must plan to overcome, winters are cold, and the bureaucracy — the blocked account, the visa appointment, the city registration — is precise and unforgiving of a careless file. Some states, notably Bavaria, have introduced tuition fees for non-EU students, so the "free" headline needs checking against your specific university.
Germany suits a serious, disciplined student — particularly in a technical field — who is ready to learn the language and wants an affordable, high-quality degree with a strong route into European work. For that applicant, it is one of the best-value choices anywhere.
What to know before you apply — Germany in 2026
The blocked account. Most Indian students must open a blocked account (Sperrkonto) and deposit roughly €11,904 for the year before the visa is granted. The money is released to you in monthly instalments after you arrive.
Tuition — mostly free, but check. Public universities charge little or no tuition, just a small semester contribution. However, some states — Bavaria in particular — have introduced tuition fees for non-EU students. Confirm the position for your specific university and state.
The 18-month job-seeker permit. After graduating, you can apply for an 18-month residence permit to look for work matching your qualification — one of the most generous post-study windows in Europe.
The Opportunity Card. Germany has introduced the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card), a points-based route to come and look for work. It is work-migration territory, which Lifeset Overseas does not process, but it signals how openly Germany is courting skilled talent.
Work during study. Students can generally work 140 full days or 280 half days per year alongside their studies.
Language matters. English-taught master's programmes are common, but settlement, most jobs and daily bureaucracy run in German. Treat language learning as part of the plan, not an afterthought.
The pattern: Germany is affordable and full of opportunity, but it rewards a precise, well-prepared, language-aware applicant.

Germany visa costs — what to budget
The figures below are indicative — confirm current numbers with the German mission and your university.
| Route | Government fee (approx, EUR) | Also budget for | |---|---|---| | National (D) study visa | Around €75 | Blocked account of ~€11,904, semester contribution, health insurance | | Schengen visit visa | Around €90 | Trip funds, travel insurance, return travel |
Germany visa processing times
German student visa processing depends heavily on appointment availability at the mission, the season and how complete your file is.
| Route | Typical processing | Note | |---|---|---| | National (D) study visa | Several weeks to a few months | Book the visa appointment as early as possible | | Schengen visit visa | Around 15 days, sometimes longer | Slower in peak travel seasons |
The biggest delay is often securing the visa appointment itself — start the process early.
Where Indian students go in Germany
Germany's strength runs deepest in engineering and the sciences. The Technical University of Munich, LMU Munich, Heidelberg University, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin and many more are internationally respected — and the country's network of universities of applied sciences links study tightly to industry.
City choice shapes both cost and language exposure. Berlin is the largest student hub, more international and English-friendly. Munich and Stuttgart sit at the heart of engineering and the automotive industry, but with higher living costs — and Bavaria's new non-EU tuition fees apply around Munich. Frankfurt, Hamburg and Cologne each combine strong universities with real job markets. Choose the city for your field, your budget and how much German immersion you want.
The Indian community in Germany
Germany's Indian community is younger than those in Canada or the UK, but it is one of the fastest-growing in Europe — driven by students and skilled professionals, and concentrated in Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt.
Indian grocery stores, restaurants and student associations are well established in the larger cities, and the student community in particular is sizeable and supportive. Outside the big cities, the community is thinner, and German-language daily life becomes more central.
The climate is cold-continental — proper winters with snow, though not as severe or as long as much of Canada. The bigger adjustment for most Indian students is not the weather but the language and the directness of German bureaucracy.

Germany visa FAQs
Is studying in Germany really free? At most public universities, tuition is little or nothing — you pay only a small semester contribution. But some states, notably Bavaria, have introduced tuition fees for non-EU students, so confirm the position for your university.
What is a blocked account? A Sperrkonto — a special account into which you deposit roughly €11,904 before your visa is granted, proving you can support yourself. The money is released to you in monthly amounts after you arrive in Germany.
Do I need to know German? For an English-taught master's, you can start without it. But daily life, bureaucracy and most jobs run in German — so for any long-term plan, learning the language is essential, not optional.
Can I work while studying in Germany? Students can generally work 140 full days or 280 half days per year. It helps with living costs, but it is not a substitute for the blocked account.
Can I stay in Germany after my degree? Yes — you can apply for an 18-month residence permit to look for work matching your qualification, one of the most generous post-study windows in Europe.
How do I get permanent residence in Germany? Through the settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis), typically after about five years of residence and contributions — and faster for EU Blue Card holders with German-language ability.
How much money do I need for a German student visa? The main figure is the blocked account — roughly €11,904 for the year. See our proof of funds guide for how the requirement works.
Do I need IELTS for Germany? For English-taught programmes you need to prove English ability, often through IELTS or TOEFL. For German-taught programmes you need a German-language qualification instead.
How long does a German student visa take? Several weeks to a few months — and the appointment itself can be the bottleneck. Book your visa appointment as early as you possibly can.
My German visa was refused — what now? Identify the exact reason — often the blocked account, admission or intent — fix it properly, and rebuild before reapplying. Our Germany visa refusal guide covers the common grounds.
