Study Visa
Compare Canada, the UK, Australia, the USA, Germany and more — real costs, processing times, work rights and PR pathways for Indian students.
A study visa is the official permission that lets you live in another country while you complete a recognised course — a diploma, a bachelor's, a master's or a PhD. It is separate from your university offer. A college can accept you; only that country's immigration authority can actually let you in.
More than 250,000 Indian students leave to study abroad every year, and the number keeps rising. They go for stronger degrees, real work rights alongside study, and — for many families — a genuine route to permanent residence. But the visa is the stage where good plans quietly come apart. A bright student with a weak, rushed file gets refused; an average student with a clean, well-evidenced file gets approved.
This guide is the honest version. It compares the main study destinations for Indian students in 2026 — costs, processing times, work rights and PR pathways — then walks through the application process step by step, the documents every file needs, the seven reasons study visas get refused, and the money you should budget for. No single country is "best" for everyone. The right one depends on your budget, your subject, and where you want to be in ten years.

How to choose your country
Start with budget. Germany and France charge little or no tuition at public universities, so your main cost is living expenses — they suit students who want a strong degree without a heavy loan. Canada, Australia, the UK and the USA cost more, but offer wider course choice and stronger part-time earning.
Then career and subject. The USA leads for research, technology and computer science. The UK is strong for one-year master's degrees and finance. Australia and Canada balance employability with a realistic settlement path. Germany is hard to beat for engineering. Match the country to your field, not to a trend.
Next, the PR pathway — this matters more than students think. A Canada study visa leads to a post-graduation work permit and, through Express Entry, one of the clearest routes to permanent residence. Australia offers a comparable post-study path. The UK gives a two-year Graduate Route but a harder PR journey. The USA has strong study and work options but an uncertain green-card timeline.
Finally, English-medium and climate. Canada, Australia, the UK, Ireland and New Zealand teach in English throughout. Germany and France offer many English-taught master's programmes, but daily life runs in the local language. If you have lived your whole life in Punjab, also think honestly about cold winters — Canada and northern Europe are a real adjustment.
The application process, step by step
Shortlist course and country
Pick the course, the intake (most run January and September) and a realistic country based on budget and PR goals — at least 8 to 12 months before you want to travel.Take your English test
IELTS, PTE or TOEFL, depending on what your universities and the visa accept. Book early; scores take time and you may need a retake.Apply to universities
Send applications to a sensible spread of universities and wait for the offer letter — the LOA, CAS or I-20, depending on the country.Arrange your funds
Build proof of funds early so the money is "seasoned" — settled in the account for months, not arranged days before you apply.Pay deposits and confirm your place
Pay the tuition deposit and, where required, the GIC, blocked account or first-year fee that the visa rules demand.Write your SOP and gather documents
Draft a genuine Statement of Purpose and assemble every supporting document — academics, finances and identity.Submit the visa application and biometrics
Lodge the visa application online, pay the fee, and give biometrics at the visa centre.Attend the interview (if required) and wait
The USA always interviews; others may. Then wait for the decision — and book travel only once the visa is granted.
Documents every study visa file needs
- Valid passport — with enough validity to cover your course; renew early if it expires soon.
- University offer letter — the LOA, CAS or I-20. Your whole visa is built on this.
- English test scorecard — IELTS, PTE or TOEFL, meeting both the university and the visa minimum.
- Academic transcripts and certificates — Class 10, Class 12, and any degree, with marksheets.
- Proof of funds — bank statements, FD receipts, an education loan sanction letter, or a blocked account / GIC where required.
- Statement of Purpose — your genuine reason for the course, the country and the career plan.
- Financial sponsor documents — your sponsor's income tax returns, salary slips or business proof, with a clear relationship link.
- Tuition and visa-route payments — receipts for the deposit, GIC, blocked account or first-year fee.
- Photographs and forms — visa-spec photographs and the completed, signed application forms.
- Health and character documents — medical examination, health insurance, and a police clearance certificate where the country asks for one.
Seven reasons study visas get refused — and the fix
1. Weak proof of funds. Money that lands suddenly looks borrowed. The fix: season your funds for months and keep a clear source for every large deposit.
2. A generic, copied SOP. Officers read thousands; templates stand out instantly. The fix: write your real story — why this course, this country, this career.
3. A course that does not match your background. A sharp change of field with no explanation raises doubt. The fix: explain the logic honestly, or pick a course that fits.
4. Weak ties to India. The officer must believe you have genuine reasons to return if needed. The fix: show family, property and career links clearly.
5. Low or mismatched English scores. Scores below the visa minimum, or far below your course level, get flagged. The fix: prepare properly and clear the visa threshold, not just the university one.
6. Incomplete or inconsistent documents. One date that does not match across papers can sink a file. The fix: cross-check every document before you submit.
7. A previous refusal left unaddressed. Reapplying with the same file repeats the result. The fix: get the refusal reasons — GCMS/CAIPS notes for Canada — and rebuild before you reapply.
The costs you should plan for
Budget in two buckets. One-time costs are paid once: the English test (around Rs 17,000), university application fees, the visa fee, biometrics, courier and translation charges, GCMS/CAIPS notes if you have a past refusal, and your one-way airfare. Recurring costs repeat every year: tuition, accommodation, food, local transport, health insurance and a phone plan.
The single biggest planning number is the proof of funds the visa rules demand — for example, Canada's GIC and cost-of-living requirement. That money must be visible before you apply, and arranged the right way. Our proof of funds guide breaks down exactly how much each country asks for and how to present it.

Study visa FAQs
Do I need IELTS for every country? Not always. Many countries and universities also accept PTE or TOEFL, and some waive the test if you studied in English. But you must meet the visa English requirement, which can be stricter than the university's own minimum.
Can I work while studying? Yes, in most countries — within limits. Canada allows up to 24 hours a week off-campus, Australia 48 hours a fortnight, the UK 20 hours a week in term time. The USA restricts F-1 students to on-campus work at first. Never treat part-time work as your funding plan.
What is a GIC? A Guaranteed Investment Certificate — a Canadian account you fund before you apply (CAD 20,635) to cover your first-year living costs. The money is released back to you in instalments after you arrive in Canada.
Do I need a PAL or TAL? For a Canadian study permit, most applicants now need a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) confirming you fall within that province's allocation. Your institution helps arrange it.
When should I start the process? At least 8 to 12 months before your intended intake. Funds need to be seasoned, English tests booked, offers received and the visa lodged with time to spare. Late starts cause rushed, refusal-prone files.
How much money do I need to show? It depends on the country — each sets an official living-cost figure on top of tuition. See our proof of funds guide for the current amounts and how to present them.
Can my spouse come with me? Sometimes. The rules vary and have tightened in recent years — some countries now restrict dependants to specific course levels such as a master's or PhD. Check the current rule for your destination before assuming.
Will a past visa refusal hurt my next application? Only if you ignore it. A refusal you understand and have genuinely fixed is recoverable. A refusal you reapply over with the same file will simply repeat.
Is an education loan accepted as proof of funds? Yes — a sanctioned education loan from a recognised bank is accepted by most countries, and is often the cleanest way to show funds.
Do I have to attend a visa interview? The USA interviews every applicant. Most other countries decide on the documents, though they may still call you in. A calm, honest, consistent interview matters as much as the paperwork.
