Tuition (public universities, English-medium Masters)
Greece has been quietly building one of the more interesting English-medium higher-education offerings in southern Europe, particularly at Masters and PhD level. Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) is one of the strongest English-medium business schools in southeast Europe; National Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) has English-medium Masters programmes across the sciences, public health, and humanities; Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) offers extensive English-medium options across engineering, sciences, and social sciences.
Costs are significantly lower than Western European peers — non-EU tuition at public Greek universities ranges from approximately EUR 1,500 to EUR 9,000 per year, and Athens and Thessaloniki are among the most affordable major-city student destinations in the Eurozone. The trade-off is that the Greek system is less internationally streamlined than Germany or the Netherlands — fewer dedicated international-office resources, more direct interaction with department coordinators.
The Greek higher education sector has two main pillars:
Private "colleges" in Greece are not full universities under Greek law but operate as affiliates of foreign (typically UK or US) universities. They issue foreign-university degrees, recognised in Greece subject to specific equivalence rules. The American College of Greece and ALBA Graduate Business School are notable examples.
Greek universities have substantially expanded their English-medium programme offering over the last decade, particularly at Masters level. AUEB's English-medium Masters in International Business, Finance, Marketing, and Management are competitive globally and attract significant Indian application volume. NKUA offers English-medium MSc programmes in public health, computer science, biomedical research. AUTh has English-medium engineering and architecture Masters.
For undergraduate study in English, options are narrower but growing — NKUA, NTUA, and AUTh have specific English-medium undergraduate programmes; private colleges (American College of Greece, Deree, ACT Thessaloniki) offer full English-medium undergraduate degrees affiliated with US institutions.
The Greek long-stay D visa is the visa category for studies lasting more than 90 days. It is submitted at VFS Greece in any of the eight Indian centres (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pondicherry, Ahmedabad), or at the Embassy of Greece in New Delhi / Consulate Mumbai for some applicants.
Required documents centre on the admission letter, financial proof (approximately EUR 7,200-9,600 per year, indicative), health insurance, police clearance certificate, language proficiency appropriate to the programme, accommodation evidence, and a motivation letter. For some programmes, DOATAP credential recognition of foreign degrees is required; for many Masters admissions, the original degree suffices without separate DOATAP processing.
The visa takes typically 60-90 days from submission to decision.
After arrival in Greece on the D visa, you must register with the Aliens and Immigration Directorate of your prefecture (Athens, Thessaloniki, etc.) for the Άδεια Διαμονής (residence permit). The permit is valid for the academic year and renewed annually with proof of continued enrolment. The application also generates your AFM (Αριθμός Φορολογικού Μητρώου) — the Greek tax number, equivalent to Portugal's NIF or India's PAN — required for opening a bank account and other practical steps.
Public university tuition for non-EU students at Greek universities ranges from approximately EUR 1,500 to EUR 9,000 per year, depending on programme and university. English-medium Masters programmes are typically at the higher end of this range; Greek-medium programmes lower. By comparison, the same programmes at Western European peers (Germany, Netherlands, France) typically cost EUR 8,000-20,000 per year.
Private institutions — the American College of Greece, ALBA Graduate Business — charge EUR 5,000-15,000 per year, comparable to international private-university norms.
Living costs are among the lowest in the Eurozone for major-city study destinations. Athens student accommodation typically EUR 300-600 per month in a shared apartment in student areas (Exarcheia, Pagrati, Zografou, Ilisia); Thessaloniki is around 20% cheaper. Food, transport, books add EUR 200-350 per month. Total monthly cost for a student living independently in Athens is typically EUR 600-950 per month including housing.
