Canada, Australia, the UK and Germany each run a different system, and they reward different things — skilled work experience, education, language ability, age, and in some cases time already spent in the country. A strong profile in one system can be only an average profile in another.

How the points systems work

Canada's CRS scores you out of 1,200. The core factors are age, education, language ability (IELTS or CELPIP, and French is a bonus) and skilled work experience. There are points for a spouse's profile, for skill transferability, and large bonuses for extras — a Provincial Nominee nomination adds 600 points and is effectively a guaranteed invitation. Each draw publishes a cut-off; category-based draws target specific occupations, French speakers and trades.

Australia's points test needs a minimum of 65 to be invited, but in practice competitive scores sit higher. You earn points for age, English level, skilled employment experience (overseas and in Australia), qualifications, Australian study, a skilled partner, and state nomination — subclass 190 adds 5 points, the regional 491 adds 15. Before any of this, your occupation must clear a skills assessment.

The UK and Germany do not score you. They reward time: you build toward settlement by holding a qualifying visa, staying compliant, and meeting language and residence rules. There is no profile to optimise — only a clean record to maintain.

The PR application process, step by step

This is the route for the points-based systems — Canada and Australia. The UK and Germany follow the timeline of the underlying work visa.

1. Check eligibility and your occupation

   Confirm your occupation is recognised and that you meet the basic age, education and experience bars before spending money.

2. Get your skills assessed

   Australia requires a positive skills assessment from the relevant authority; Canada requires an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for foreign degrees.

3. Take your language test

   Sit IELTS, PTE or CELPIP. Language is one of the highest-scoring, most improvable factors — prepare seriously.

4. Calculate and improve your score

   Work out your honest CRS or points score, then close the gaps — a retake, more experience, or a provincial/state nomination.

5. Create your profile or EOI

   Submit your Express Entry profile or SkillSelect Expression of Interest and enter the pool.

6. Receive an invitation to apply

   Wait for a draw to invite your score. A nomination dramatically improves your odds here.

7. Prepare funds and documents

   Assemble proof of settlement funds, reference letters, and every supporting document before the clock starts.

8. Lodge the application, medicals and police checks

   Submit within the deadline, complete medical exams and police clearance certificates, and wait for the decision.

Documents every PR application needs

1. Valid passport — for you and every family member included.
2. Educational credentials — degrees, transcripts and an ECA or skills assessment report.
3. Language test scorecard — IELTS, PTE or CELPIP, meeting the route's minimum.
4. Work experience proof — detailed reference letters stating role, duties, hours and dates.
5. Proof of settlement funds — bank statements showing the required amount, properly seasoned.
6. Identity and civil documents — birth certificates, marriage certificate, and proof of relationship for dependants.
7. Police clearance certificates — from India and any country you have lived in long enough to need one.
8. Medical examination — completed by an approved panel physician.

Why PR plans stall — and the fix

A score that is below the cut-off. Many applicants enter the pool and are simply never invited. The fix: calculate your real score first, then raise it — language retake, more experience, or a nomination.

A weak skills assessment or ECA. A mismatch between your degree, your job and the nominated occupation can fail the assessment. The fix: choose the occupation that genuinely matches your background.

Thin work-experience letters. Letters that miss hours, duties or dates lose you points and credibility. The fix: get detailed letters on company letterhead, signed and dated.

Funds that are not ready. Settlement funds arranged at the last minute look borrowed. The fix: season the money for months — see our proof of funds guide.

Missing the post-invitation deadline. After an invitation the window to submit is short and unforgiving. The fix: prepare every document before you expect the invitation.

Inconsistent information. Dates and job titles that differ across documents trigger doubt. The fix: cross-check every form against every document.

The costs you should plan for

PR has real, layered costs. One-time costs include the language test (around Rs 17,000), the ECA or skills assessment, government application fees, the right-of-PR fee where it applies, medical exams, police clearance certificates, and translations.

The largest planning figure is proof of settlement funds — money you must show you can bring with you. For Canada's Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades streams, IRCC sets a fixed amount that rises with family size; the Canadian Experience Class is exempt. This money must be visible and seasoned before you apply.

What is a CRS score? The Comprehensive Ranking System is Canada's points score, out of 1,200. It ranks every Express Entry profile; each draw invites the highest scores above a cut-off.

Do I need a job offer for Canada PR? No. Canada's Express Entry does not require a job offer. A valid offer can add points, but most successful Indian applicants are invited without one. Australia's subclass 189 also needs no job offer.

Can I include my spouse and children? Yes. PR applications cover your spouse and dependent children, and a skilled spouse can even add points to your score in both the Canadian and Australian systems.

How long does PR take from India? For Canada, plan on roughly 6 months for the application once you are invited — plus the months of preparation before that. Australia varies and is often longer. Realistically, budget a year or more from start to landing.

What is an ECA? An Educational Credential Assessment verifies that your Indian degree is equivalent to a Canadian one. Canada's Express Entry requires it before you can claim points for foreign education.

Do I need IELTS for PR? You need an approved language test — IELTS, PTE or CELPIP for Canada, IELTS or PTE for Australia. Language is one of the biggest scoring factors, so a strong result matters far more than just "passing".

Can a study visa lead to PR? Yes — this is one of the strongest routes. Studying in Canada or Australia, then working there, builds the local experience and language points that make a PR profile competitive.

What if my score is too low to be invited? You raise it. A language retake, more skilled experience, French for Canada, or a provincial/state nomination can each lift a profile from the waiting pool into an invitation.

Is there an age limit for PR? There is no hard cut-off, but points peak in your twenties and early thirties and taper after. Age is one reason not to delay a PR plan once you are eligible.

Will a past visa refusal affect my PR application? You must declare it, and an undisclosed refusal is far more damaging than the refusal itself. Declared honestly and explained, a past refusal does not block PR.
