UK visas, built right for Indian applicants.

Indian passport holders are visa-nationals, so a UK visa must be granted before travel. From the Standard Visitor visa for tourism, business and short study to transit and medical visits, applications are made online on GOV.UK with biometrics at a UK visa application centre in India. We build the file the way UK Visas and Immigration expects to see it.

For an Indian student who wants a respected degree quickly, the UK has one decisive advantage: the one-year master's. A taught postgraduate degree that takes two years in many countries is completed in twelve months in Britain — one year of tuition and living costs instead of two, and a faster route into work.

The UK also carries weight. Its universities are globally ranked, its degrees are recognised by Indian and international employers, and for finance, law, business and the humanities the reputation is hard to match. After study, the Graduate Route currently allows two years of post-study work — three for PhD holders — time to find a job and build UK experience.

For Indian families there is history, too. The Indian and Punjabi community in Britain is one of the oldest and largest anywhere — Southall in London, and large communities in Birmingham, Leicester and Wolverhampton, mean gurdwaras, Indian groceries and a familiar social world are never far. The country teaches entirely in English, and the time difference with India is small.

But the UK has tightened sharply. From 2024 most students can no longer bring dependants, the family-visa income requirement rose, and the Graduate Route has been under government review. The UK is still very much open to Indian students — applications remain high — but it is a more selective, more expensive country than it was a few years ago, and it rewards applicants who understand the current rules rather than the old ones.

It is also not the easiest country for settlement. Unlike Canada or Australia, the UK has no points-based "apply for PR" system; Indefinite Leave to Remain comes only after years on a qualifying visa. The UK suits an applicant who wants a strong, fast degree and serious work experience — and who treats long-term settlement as a separate, longer question.

What changed recently — the UK's 2024-2026 shifts

The UK reshaped its student and family immigration rules across 2024 and 2025. Plan around the current rules, not older advice.

Student dependants were restricted. Since January 2024, most international students can no longer bring family members. Dependants are allowed only for students on postgraduate research programmes such as a PhD, or on government-sponsored courses. For most taught master's students, bringing a spouse on the student visa is no longer possible.

The Graduate Route is under review. The two-year post-study work visa — three years for PhDs — still exists, but the government has reviewed it and signalled it may be shortened. Treat two years as today's rule, but watch for change.

The family-visa income threshold rose. The minimum income to sponsor a spouse or partner was raised to £29,000, with further increases proposed. Anyone planning a UK family visa must check the current figure carefully.

Skilled Worker rules tightened. Salary thresholds for work visas were raised substantially. That is work-permit territory — which Lifeset Overseas does not process — but it matters as context: the work-and-settle route has become harder and more expensive.

Maintenance funds and the health surcharge. Students must still show maintenance money — currently around £1,483 per month for London and £1,136 outside, for up to nine months — and pay the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of the visa.

The pattern is clear: the UK still wants genuine students, but it has raised the bar on money, dependants and post-study expectations.

UK visa processing times

UK visa processing is relatively fast and predictable compared with some countries, but it still varies with season and visa centre. Treat these as planning ranges.

| Route | Typical processing | Note | |---|---|---| | Student visa | Around 3 weeks from outside the UK | Priority services may be offered separately | | Standard Visitor visa | Around 3 weeks | Slower in peak travel seasons | | Spouse / family visa | Around 8 to 12 weeks | Longer than most other UK routes |

Where Indian students go in the UK

The UK's university strength is broad. Indian students cluster around globally ranked institutions — Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL, the University of Manchester, the University of Edinburgh, King's College London and Warwick — as well as a wide range of strong city universities offering the one-year master's that draws so many applicants.

City choice shapes cost more than anything. London offers the most universities and jobs, but the highest living costs and the higher maintenance requirement. Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Coventry and Glasgow offer respected universities at noticeably lower living costs, which is why many Indian students deliberately study outside London. Pick the city for your budget and your course, not only for the name.

The Indian community in the UK

Few countries feel as familiar to a Punjabi family as Britain. Southall in west London is one of the most famous Punjabi neighbourhoods anywhere outside India, and large, long-established Indian communities thrive in Birmingham, Leicester, Wolverhampton, Slough and Hounslow.

That means gurdwaras in every major city, Punjabi-speaking professionals, Indian grocery stores and restaurants, and a deep community network that makes arriving alone far less daunting. For students, it also means familiar food and festivals are never hard to find.

The honest counterweight is the weather — not the cold of Canada, but a grey, wet, low-light climate, especially in winter. UK winters are mild by Canadian standards, yet the lack of sunshine is a real adjustment from Punjab. It is easily managed, but worth preparing for.

Why Lifeset Overseas for your UK visa

We are a licensed visa consultancy in Patiala, Punjab, and the UK is one of our most-asked-about destinations — so we have tracked every 2024-2026 rule change through real applications.

You get one consultant from your first call to the visa decision. Before we take a case, we give you an honest assessment — whether your profile, funds and course choice are worth filing, and whether the UK genuinely fits your goals or another country serves you better. Our fees are fixed and disclosed up front, with no commission middlemen.

We build each file in detail — the CAS, the maintenance-funds story under the 28-day rule, the SOP, the document set — all checked before submission. And if your UK student visa was refused, we work through the refusal, the Administrative Review option, and a properly rebuilt reapplication.

UK visa FAQs

Can I bring my spouse on a UK student visa? Usually no. Since January 2024, only students on postgraduate research programmes such as a PhD, or government-sponsored courses, can bring dependants. Most taught master's students cannot.

What is the Graduate Route? A post-study work visa that currently allows two years of work after a UK degree — three years for PhD holders. It is under government review and may be shortened, so check the current rule before relying on it.

How much money do I need for a UK student visa? On top of your first-year tuition, you must show maintenance funds — around £1,483 per month for London and £1,136 outside, for up to nine months — held for 28 continuous days. See our proof of funds guide.

What is a CAS? A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies — the electronic reference your university issues once you accept your place. Your student visa application is built on it.

Do I need IELTS for a UK visa? You need to prove English ability — often through IELTS for UKVI or another approved test, though some universities assess English differently. The visa English requirement can be stricter than the university's.

Can I work while studying in the UK? Most degree-level students can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during holidays. Treat it as support, not as your funding plan.

How do I get permanent residence in the UK? Through Indefinite Leave to Remain, which is time-based — typically five years of continuous lawful residence on a qualifying visa, plus the Life in the UK test and the English requirement. There is no points-based PR application.

What is the Immigration Health Surcharge? A fee paid with your visa application that gives you NHS access for the length of your stay — around £776 per year for students. It is separate from the visa fee.

How long does a UK student visa take? Usually around three weeks when you apply from outside the UK, though it varies by season and visa centre. Apply in good time before your course start date.

My UK visa was refused — what can I do? Depending on the refusal, you may be able to request an Administrative Review of the decision, or reapply with a corrected, stronger file. Identify the exact reason first — see our UK student visa refusal guide.
