United Kingdom UK Short-Term Study Visit — overview

The UK Short-Term Study Visit is the Standard Visitor visa used for study. It lets you visit the UK for up to 6 months to study at an accredited UK institution — including English language courses — to do a short piece of research relevant to a course you study overseas, or to sit an exam, do an elective, or take the OSCE or PLAB test.

The accredited institution cannot be a state-funded school or academy. For courses longer than 6 months you need a different route — a Short-term study visa for English courses up to 11 months, or the UK Student visa for longer programmes run by licensed sponsors.

    A passport valid for the whole of your stay in the UK.

  • Acceptance at an accredited institution

    Proof you have been accepted on a course at an accredited UK institution (not a state-funded school or academy).

  • Course of 6 months or less

    Evidence the course is no longer than 6 months (distance-learning courses are treated differently).

  • ATAS certificate

    An Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate, if your subject and level require one.

  • Funds to support yourself

    Bank statements showing you can pay for the course and support yourself.

  • Proof you will leave the UK

    Evidence of your ties to India and intention to return after the course.

  • Return journey & travel plan

    Proof you can pay for the return journey, plus accommodation details.
