Japan Tourist Visa — overview
The Japan Tourist Visa is a short-stay visa for visiting Japan for a holiday, sightseeing or recreation, for a stay of up to 90 days. It can be issued as single-entry or, for eligible travellers, multiple-entry.
Applications in the New Delhi jurisdiction are submitted through VFS Global and decided by the Embassy of Japan. The visa fee for Indian nationals is modest, and the Embassy looks for a clear day-by-day travel plan, sound finances and genuine ties to India.

Japan tourist visa for Indian passport holders
Indian nationals need a visa to visit Japan. Short-term tourist visas are applied for through the VFS Japan Visa Application Centres, and the file is decided by the Japanese mission with jurisdiction over your state of residence: the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and the north, and the Consulates General in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata for their regions. Applying at the wrong post is rejected at the counter, and the Bengaluru consulate, for example, asks applicants whose passport was issued outside Karnataka to prove current residence in the state.
What the consulate checklist asks for
- Original passport valid for at least three months with blank pages, and old passports.
- A photograph with 80 per cent face coverage, 45 × 35 mm, white background, taken within six months.
- The completed application form and an original signed covering letter naming all accompanying persons, the travel dates and who pays the expenses.
- An original NOC or leave-approval letter from your employer; GST certificate if self-employed; professional registration for doctors and lawyers; property documents for landlords and agriculturists; a bonafide letter for students.
- Accommodation blocked in the applicant's or accompanying person's name, and a day-to-day schedule in Japan.
- A travel itinerary with blocked flight tickets or cruise schedule to and from Japan; if you continue to a third country, that country's visa copy.
- For employees: the latest three months' salary bank statements up to the date of submission, three months' pay slips and income-tax return acknowledgements for the last two years. If sponsored: the sponsor's letter, three months' bank statements, two years' ITR acknowledgements, pay slips and ID.
- Divorce decree if divorced; family or friends travelling together must file together.
Multiple-entry visas
The Embassy of Japan in New Delhi publishes separate checklists for multiple-entry visas: for applicants with two or more trips to Japan in the last three years, one trip to Japan, trips to Japan and G7 countries, and "applicants with sufficient financial capacity", for whom the checklist requires the latest income-tax return, with kinship documents for a spouse or child included on the same basis.
