Japan is one of Asia's most rewarding study destinations — a country of world-class universities, deep strength in engineering, technology and research, and a society defined by safety, precision and quality. For Indian students, it offers something different from the Western route: a top-tier education much closer to home, often supported by generous scholarships.

Japan is not part of the Schengen Area; it runs its own visa system. After study, Japan — facing an ageing population and a real need for skilled talent — has been actively widening pathways for foreign graduates to stay and work.

For Indian students, the appeal is quality and value: globally ranked universities, low crime, excellent infrastructure, and scholarship schemes that can substantially reduce costs.

The honest counterweights: while English-taught degree programmes have grown, much of Japanese academic and daily life runs in Japanese, and the language is a serious commitment for any long-term plan. Japan is also a different cultural world from the West.

Japan suits a focused, disciplined student — especially in engineering, technology or research — who wants a high-quality Asian education, is open to learning Japanese, and values safety and scholarship support.

What a study visa for Japan involves

The Japanese student route is built around the Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Once you are admitted, your institution in Japan applies for the COE on your behalf; you then take it to the Japanese mission to obtain the student visa.

You must show proof of funds to cover tuition and living costs, alongside your admission and the COE. After arrival, you complete residence registration locally. Japan also allows students to apply for permission to work part-time.

The Japanese process is methodical and institution-led — it rewards an early start, because the COE step itself takes time.

Where Indian students go in Japan

Japan's universities are globally respected. The University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Osaka University, Tohoku University and the Institute of Science Tokyo lead the field, with particular strength in engineering, technology and research. English-taught degree programmes have expanded, especially at master's level.

Tokyo is the largest hub, with the widest choice of programmes and the biggest job market. Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya and Fukuoka offer strong universities at a more moderate cost of living. Choose the city for your programme and the language of instruction.

The Indian community in Japan

Japan's Indian community is modest but growing, driven increasingly by technology professionals and students, with a well-known community in the Nishikasai area of Tokyo and a presence in other major cities.

Indian grocery stores and restaurants are established in Tokyo and the larger cities, though the community is smaller than in the English-speaking destinations. The climate has four distinct seasons — humid summers and cold northern winters — varied across the country.

Are courses in Japan taught in English? English-taught degree programmes have grown, especially at master's level, but much of academic and daily life still runs in Japanese.

How much money do I need for a Japan study visa? Japan requires proof you can cover tuition and living costs. See our proof of funds guide.

Are scholarships available in Japan? Yes — Japan offers a range of scholarships, including government schemes, that can significantly reduce the cost of study. Apply early.

Can I work while studying in Japan? Students can apply for permission to work part-time, within an hours limit. Treat it as support, not as your funding plan.

Can I stay in Japan after my degree? Yes — Japan has been widening pathways for foreign graduates to switch to a work visa and stay on.

Do I need to know Japanese? For an English-taught programme you can start without it, but daily life and most jobs run in Japanese. For a long-term plan, learning it is essential.

Do I need IELTS for Japan? For English-taught programmes, yes — usually IELTS or TOEFL to the level your programme sets. Japanese-taught programmes require Japanese-language proof.
