Japan Transit Visa — overview
The Japan Transit Visa is for travellers passing through Japan on the way to another country, for a short stop.
The application must show you are genuinely in transit: a confirmed onward journey and the right to enter your final destination country. Applications are submitted through VFS Global in the New Delhi jurisdiction.

Japan transit visa for Indian passport holders
Indian nationals who leave the international transit area at a Japanese airport, or who pass through Japan by sea, need a transit visa. Passengers who stay airside on a same-day international connection generally do not, but this depends on the airport and the connection; confirm with your airline before booking. The transit visa is applied for through VFS Japan and decided by the mission with jurisdiction over your state; Punjab applicants fall under the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi.
The checklist
- Original passport valid for at least three months.
- Photograph 35 × 45 mm on a white background.
- The completed application form.
- An original covering letter signed by the applicant.
- A travel itinerary in the applicant's name with blocked flight tickets or the cruise schedule to and from Japan.
- The visa of the destination country, which the checklist notes is "not necessary if the applicant does not require a visa to enter the destination country".
