United States USA Business Visa (B-1) — overview

The USA Business Visa (visa category B-1) is the nonimmigrant visa for visiting the United States temporarily for business — attending meetings, conferences and negotiations, consulting with associates, or settling an estate. It is part of the combined B-1/B-2 visitor visa and does not permit employment in the US.

The process is the same as for any nonimmigrant visa: the online DS-160, the visa fee, a biometrics appointment, and a consular interview at the US Embassy or a Consulate. A clear business purpose, supported by your employer and the US host, makes the case straightforward.

The B-1 business visitor visa

Business trips to the United States for meetings, negotiations, conferences and similar activities use the B-1 classification, usually issued together with B-2 as a combined B-1/B-2 visitor visa. B status "does not authorise ordinary work or credit-bearing study": the line the consular officer draws is between permitted meetings or negotiations and employment.

The application packet

Passport, normally valid six months beyond the intended stay.
Your individual DS-160 confirmation page, the fee receipt where required, the appointment confirmation, and a photo if the digital upload failed.
Business evidence: the invitation, event or assignment material explaining the permitted meetings or negotiations rather than employment.
Evidence of purpose, planned duration, ability to pay and intent to depart, suited to your employment, business, family and financial circumstances.

What is not required

The Knowledge Base records from the State Department source that "an invitation letter or affidavit of support is not required for an ordinary visitor application" and that "no universal minimum balance, bank-statement period or property requirement is specified". The interview turns on the credibility of your purpose and your ties to India under section 214(b), not on a bank figure.
