Australia has become, for many Indian students, the most balanced of the major destinations — and the Punjabi community there is now one of the fastest-growing of any country in the world.

Its appeal is a genuine three-way combination: strong universities, real work rights, and a clear permanent-residence pathway through the SkillSelect points system. A graduate of an eligible Australian course can move onto a Temporary Graduate visa, gain skilled local experience, and use it to apply for PR through subclasses 189, 190 or 491 — a transparent, points-tested route comparable to Canada's.

The climate helps too. Of all the big study destinations, Australia is the easiest adjustment for someone from Punjab — warm, sunny, and far from the long sub-zero winters of Canada or northern Europe. Cities like Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane have large, established Punjabi communities, gurdwaras, and Indian groceries and restaurants everywhere.

But Australia, like Canada and the UK, spent 2024 tightening hard. It replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant test with a new Genuine Student requirement, raised the financial-capacity figure, lifted English requirements, sharply increased the student visa fee, and introduced planning limits on international student numbers. The bar for a credible student application is meaningfully higher than it was.

The result is a country still very much open — and still one of the strongest PR pathways available to Indian applicants — but far less forgiving of a weak or rushed file. Australia in 2026 rewards a genuine student with a clear study-and-career logic, properly evidenced funds, and an honest application.

For settlement, Australia is among the best of the major destinations: the SkillSelect system is points-based, published and predictable, and the study-to-PR route is real.

What changed recently — Australia's 2024-2026 shifts

The Genuine Student requirement replaced the GTE. In 2024 Australia retired the Genuine Temporary Entrant test and introduced the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. Student visa applications are now assessed against a clearer set of GS questions about your circumstances, study choice and intentions — and a weak, generic answer is a common reason for refusal.

Financial capacity rose. The amount a student must show for living costs was increased to AUD 29,710 for the main applicant — on top of tuition and travel.

English requirements were lifted. The minimum English level for the student visa and the post-study Graduate visa was raised, so a score that passed a year or two ago may no longer be enough.

The student visa fee jumped. Australia sharply increased the student visa application charge, making a refused application a far more expensive mistake.

Student numbers were capped. Australia introduced planning limits on new international student commencements, which affects how institutions allocate places.

Post-study work was adjusted. Temporary Graduate visa durations were revised and the age limit tightened for most applicants — so the study-to-work timeline must be planned carefully.

The takeaway for 2026: Australia still offers one of the best study-to-PR routes for Indian applicants, but the Genuine Student requirement means your story — why this course, why Australia, how it fits your career — matters as much as your marks.

Australia visa costs — what to budget

The figures below are indicative — Australian visa charges are revised regularly, so confirm current numbers on the Home Affairs site.

Australian processing varies with the Genuine Student assessment, the institution and the season. Treat these as planning ranges.

Where Indian students go in Australia

Australia's research-intensive Group of Eight — the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, the Australian National University, UNSW, the University of Queensland, Monash, the University of Western Australia and the University of Adelaide — anchors the country's reputation, alongside a wide network of strong technology and applied universities.

City choice drives cost and lifestyle. Melbourne and Sydney are the largest hubs, with the most universities and jobs but the highest living costs. Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide offer respected universities at lower living costs, and some regional study locations carry extra points toward skilled PR. Choosing a regional option deliberately can strengthen both your budget and your PR plan.

The Punjabi community in Australia

Australia's Punjabi community is one of the fastest-growing anywhere. Melbourne in particular has a very large Punjabi population, with major communities also in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

That means gurdwaras across every major city, Punjabi-speaking professionals, Indian grocery stores, restaurants and community organisations, and a strong, recent network of families who have made the same move. For a student arriving alone, that support is real and close at hand.

And unlike Canada or northern Europe, the climate is an easy win — warm, sunny and far closer to what a Punjab family is used to. It is one less thing to adjust to in an already big move.

Australia visa FAQs

What is the Genuine Student requirement? The GS requirement, introduced in 2024, replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant test. It assesses, through a set of questions, whether you are a genuine student — your circumstances, why you chose the course and Australia, and how it fits your future. A weak, generic answer is a common refusal reason.

How much money do I need for an Australian student visa? You must show the financial-capacity amount — AUD 29,710 for the main applicant — on top of tuition and travel. See our proof of funds guide for how to present it.

Can I work while studying in Australia? Yes — student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session, and without that cap during scheduled course breaks.

What is OSHC? Overseas Student Health Cover — the health insurance that is compulsory for the entire length of an Australian student visa. You must arrange it before the visa is granted.

Can I get PR after studying in Australia? Often, yes. You can move to a Temporary Graduate visa, gain skilled work experience, and apply for permanent residence through the SkillSelect points system — one of the clearer PR routes available.

What is SkillSelect? Australia's points-based system for skilled migration. You lodge an Expression of Interest, and the highest-scoring profiles are invited to apply for subclass 189, 190 or 491 visas.

Do I need IELTS for an Australian visa? You need an approved English test meeting the visa minimum, which was raised in 2024. IELTS, PTE and others are accepted; the visa requirement can be stricter than the university's.

Can I bring my family on an Australian student visa? Australia still allows eligible student visa holders to include a spouse and dependent children, subject to the rules — a real difference from the UK. Check the current conditions for your course level.

How long does an Australian student visa take? It varies — a few weeks to a few months — depending on the Genuine Student assessment and how complete your file is. Apply well before your course start date.

My Australian student visa was refused — what now? Identify the exact GS or financial reason, fix it genuinely, and rebuild the file before reapplying. Our subclass 500 refusal guide walks through GS refusals in detail.
