Australia Dependent & Family Visa

Australia lets student and skilled visa holders include family — but dependants must be declared from the start wherever possible, and the financial capacity test rises with each person.

Australia Dependent & Family Visa — overview

Declare everyone. Even those staying behind.

Australia asks you to list your entire family unit on the main application — including members who will not travel. Skipping that step because someone "isn't coming anyway" is the mistake that quietly closes the door later, because a subsequent-entrant application requires showing they were declared at the outset.

If you take one thing from this page: declare the family unit at the start, always.

Together beats later

Family members included in the original application are assessed alongside it. Adding them afterwards means a separate application, its own processing time, and its own evidentiary burden. Where a family intends to be together, applying together is faster, cheaper and materially less fragile.

The money question is bigger than people expect

Financial capacity scales with each person, and school-age children add a schooling component — in several states, temporary-visa families pay fees at government schools. Families budget for tuition and living costs, then meet the schooling line late. We put the whole figure in front of you before you commit.

De facto partners: start early

Australia genuinely recognises unmarried partners, but the evidence standard is higher and cumulative — documented cohabitation, shared finances, social recognition, over a qualifying period. That evidence cannot be assembled in a fortnight. If this is your situation, the planning starts months before the application does.

Documents you need

  • Declared family members

Everyone in the family unit must be declared on the main application even if they do not travel — undeclared family members create serious problems later.

  • Relationship evidence

Marriage certificate, or for de facto partners, evidence of a genuine relationship over the qualifying period: shared finances, household, social recognition and commitment.

  • Financial capacity for the whole family

Funds covering travel, living costs and, for school-age children, schooling. The reference amounts are revised annually.

  • Health insurance for every member

Overseas Student Health Cover, or equivalent, for the full duration.

  • Health examinations and character checks

For each family member, through a panel physician.

  • Schooling arrangements for children

School-age children must attend school, and in some states that carries fees for temporary-visa families.

5 steps

How the process works

Typical processing: Family members included in the original application are decided with it; subsequent-entrant applications take their own processing time. Plan several months ahead of travel.

  1. Step 1

Declare the family unit at the start

This single step prevents most of the problems families hit later.

  2. Step 2

Build relationship evidence to the standard required

De facto claims need the longest lead time — start early.

  3. Step 3

    Demonstrate financial capacity for everyone

The figure rises with each person; schooling is its own component.

  4. Step 4

    Arrange health cover and examinations

    For each member, before lodging.

  5. Step 5

Lodge together, or as subsequent entrants

Together is faster and simpler in almost every case.

Frequently asked questions

  • Dependants of student visa holders generally receive work rights, with the permitted hours depending on the main applicant's course level — partners of master's by research and doctoral students typically have broader rights than those of coursework students. Caps are set by regulation and revised.

  • You can apply for them as subsequent entrants, but you must show they were declared in the original application. Family members who were never declared create a serious problem — this is precisely why we insist on declaring everyone, including those who will not travel.

  • Yes, school-age children on dependent visas must attend school, and in several states temporary-visa families pay fees for government schools. Both facts belong in your budget before you commit.

  • Australia recognises de facto partners, generally after a qualifying period of documented cohabitation. The evidence bar is higher than for married couples, and it takes time to build, so this is the case that most rewards early planning.

Why it matters

Going it alone vs filing with us

On your own

  • Guessing the document list — one missing or wrongly formatted paper triggers a refusal.
  • Generic cover letters copied from the internet that officers recognise and flag.
  • No read on peak rejection windows or what this visa post is strict about.
  • Government and VFS fees are non-refundable — money lost if you are refused.
  • A refusal stamp follows you and weakens every future visa application.

With Lifeset Overseas

  • An honest case assessment before you spend a rupee on government fees.
  • A file built to the embassy's exact checklist and in the exact order.
  • Weak finances, ties or purpose identified and fixed before submission.
  • Previously refused? We can rescue and rebuild the file.
  • Every case handled by one consultant, end to end.

Refused before?

A refusal isn't the end

A refusal is not a permanent bar — but it only improves if the actual reason is found and answered, and nobody can tell you a second application will succeed. If a Australia visa has been refused, we:

  • Read the actual refusal letter and pinpoint the real gaps.
  • Advise whether to pull the officer's notes (CAIPS / GCMS) for the true reason.
  • Identify which part was weak — funds, employment, purpose or ties.
  • Tell you honestly whether to reapply now or strengthen the file first.
  • Refused? Your fee back, or a rebuilt application free — your choice.
