New Zealand Skilled Migrant Residence — overview

The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa is the single largest residence pathway for skilled Indians. It uses a simplified 6-point threshold: you reach the points through one skill source — a New Zealand occupational registration, a recognised qualification at NZQF Level 7 or higher, or income from skilled employment — topped up if needed with points for New Zealand skilled work experience.

Beyond the points, you must hold a skilled job, or job offer, with an Accredited Employer. Faster Green List pathways also exist: a Tier 1 Green List role can lead to a Straight to Residence Visa without prior New Zealand experience, while Tier 2 roles lead to residence after 24 months of qualifying work. An initial Resident Visa becomes a Permanent Resident Visa after 24 months.

Lifeset Overseas assesses your points honestly, advises on the qualification assessment and the Green List, and builds the residence file around a genuine skilled job offer.

5 steps

How the process works

Typical processing: Prioritised applications (occupational registration or high-wage roles) are often decided in 4-7 weeks; non-prioritised cases take 2-18 months.

  1. Step 1

    Free points & eligibility assessment

We work out your skilled-resident points honestly and confirm whether SMC or a Green List route fits best.

  2. Step 2

    Secure the skilled job offer

Residence depends on a genuine offer with an Accredited Employer — we advise on positioning and the job documents.

  3. Step 3

    Assessments — qualification, English, health

We guide the IQA, the English test and the medical and police certificates.

  4. Step 4

    Lodge the resident application online

The SMC application is submitted through Immigration Online for you and your family.

  5. Step 5

Decision — Resident Visa to PRV

Immigration NZ decides the application; after 24 months as a resident you can apply for the Permanent Resident Visa.

Frequently asked questions

Q.How does the points system work?
You need 6 skilled-resident points. They come from one skill source — a New Zealand occupational registration, a Level 7+ qualification, or skilled income — and can be topped up with up to 3 points for New Zealand skilled work experience.
Q.What is the Green List?
The Green List names high-demand occupations. A Tier 1 role can lead to a Straight to Residence Visa with no prior NZ experience; a Tier 2 role leads to residence after 24 months of qualifying work.
Q.When do I get permanent residence?
An initial Resident Visa lets you live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely. After 24 months on it, and meeting commitment criteria, you can apply for the Permanent Resident Visa, which removes travel conditions.

Why it matters

Going it alone vs filing with us

On your own

  • Guessing the document list — one missing or wrongly formatted paper triggers a refusal.
  • Generic cover letters copied from the internet that officers recognise and flag.
  • No read on peak rejection windows or what this visa post is strict about.
  • Government and VFS fees are non-refundable — money lost if you are refused.
  • A refusal stamp follows you and weakens every future visa application.

With Lifeset Overseas

  • An honest case assessment before you spend a rupee on government fees.
  • A file built to the embassy's exact checklist and in the exact order.
  • Weak finances, ties or purpose identified and fixed before submission.
  • Previously refused? We can rescue and rebuild the file.
  • Every case handled by one licensed consultant, end to end.

Refused before?

A refusal isn't the end

Refused applicants often win the second time — once the real reason is fixed. If a New Zealand visa has been refused, we:

  • Read the actual refusal letter and pinpoint the real gaps.
  • Advise whether to pull the officer's notes (CAIPS / GCMS) for the true reason.
  • Identify which part was weak — funds, employment, purpose or ties.
  • Tell you honestly whether to reapply now or strengthen the file first.
  • Rebuild a stronger application — same fixed fee, refusal or first try.
