Why study in the Netherlands

The Netherlands offers the largest English-medium degree programme catalogue in continental Europe — nearly every Dutch research university and many universities of applied sciences run full programmes in English at Masters level, and a growing number at Bachelor level. The world rankings of Dutch institutions are consistently strong: University of Amsterdam (UvA), Utrecht, TU Delft, Leiden, Erasmus Rotterdam, Wageningen (one of the top agricultural universities globally), Groningen, Tilburg, Maastricht.

The trade-off, in 2026, is housing. The Dutch student-housing market has been in acute shortage for several years, particularly in Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Groningen. We advise every Indian student to begin housing search the moment admission is confirmed — often months before arrival. Failure to secure housing has, for some students, materially affected their ability to start the academic year.

The Dutch system: WO vs HBO

Dutch higher education has two parallel tracks:

  • WO (Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs) — research universities, comparable to traditional universities in other countries. Offer academic Bachelors (3 years), Masters (1-2 years), and PhDs. 14 universities in this tier including UvA, Utrecht, Leiden, TU Delft, Eindhoven (TU/e), Erasmus, Groningen, Maastricht, Tilburg, Wageningen, VU Amsterdam, Twente, Radboud, Open University.
  • HBO (Hoger Beroepsonderwijs) — universities of applied sciences, equivalent to polytechnics or universities of applied sciences elsewhere. Offer practice-oriented Bachelors (4 years) and Masters. Major HBO institutions include Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA), Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Fontys, HAN.

Both tracks are reputable. Choose based on whether you want research-academic or applied-professional orientation.

For most Bachelor programmes and many Masters programmes, applications go through Studielink (studielink.nl), the centralised Dutch application portal. You register with your DigiD (or alternative for international applicants), select up to four programmes per academic year, and the universities receive your application through the portal.

For specialist Masters programmes — particularly in business, engineering, and sciences — many Dutch universities apply directly via their own admissions portals. Check each programme's application route at the university website. Some programmes also have additional requirements like GRE/GMAT for business programmes or a portfolio for design.

The MVV — Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf

For Indian students requiring a visa, the MVV (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) is the Dutch provisional residence authorisation. Critically, the university applies for the MVV on your behalf through the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) — you do not apply directly. This is one of the most streamlined Schengen study-visa processes for Indian applicants.

The application timeline:

  • You accept the university offer and pay the first instalment of tuition (or arrange a scholarship).
  • You provide the IND financial proof — approximately EUR 14,000-15,000 per year of study (indexed annually). Bank balance, scholarship letter, or sponsorship affidavit are all acceptable.
  • The university files the MVV application with the IND.
  • The IND typically decides within 2-6 weeks for university-sponsored MVV applications.
  • On approval, you collect the MVV stamp at VFS Netherlands.

The MVV is valid for 3 months for entry to the Netherlands; on arrival you obtain the full residence permit (verblijfsvergunning) from the IND.

Tuition and the financial picture

For non-EU students, Dutch research-university tuition typically ranges EUR 8,000-20,000 per year, with sciences and engineering programmes at the upper end. HBO tuition ranges EUR 7,000-12,000 per year. Some elite programmes — Erasmus University's Rotterdam School of Management, the Top Sector Masters programmes — charge significantly more.

Living costs depend heavily on city. Amsterdam, Utrecht are the most expensive: student housing EUR 600-900 per month in the private market, plus EUR 250-400 per month for food, transport, books. Groningen, Tilburg, Maastricht, Wageningen are significantly more affordable at EUR 400-650 per month housing.

On arrival: BSN, IND, OV-chipkaart

After arriving in the Netherlands, the on-arrival checklist:

  • Within 5 working days: register at the local municipality (gemeente) — you receive your BSN (Burgerservicenummer), the Dutch citizen service number, mandatory for nearly every subsequent step (bank account, insurance, employment, etc.).
  • Collect residence permit: the IND notifies you when the verblijfsvergunning (residence permit) is ready; you collect it at an IND service point. The MVV is then replaced by the full residence permit.
  • Open a Dutch bank account: ABN AMRO and ING are the most common student-friendly banks. The BSN is required to open the account.
  • OV-chipkaart: get the public transport card.

Most Dutch universities run orientation weeks (Intro Camps, Introduction Weeks) that walk new international students through these steps. We brief Indian students in detail before departure.
