Dutch degrees are in English, the living is expensive, and the flat is the hard part

If you are choosing the Netherlands, you have probably already found what most Indian students find: almost every programme you want is taught in English, the universities are well ranked, and the total cost is high. What many students do not find out until too late is that the immigration money rule is strict and that student housing in Dutch cities is in real shortage.

Here is the study visa side in plain words.

How the Dutch student route works

The Netherlands does not make you apply for a student visa on your own. Your university applies to the Dutch immigration service, the IND, on your behalf. The IND approves a long-stay entry visa (called an MVV) together with a residence permit for study. You then collect the MVV sticker at the Dutch consulate through VFS Global in India, and travel.

The Netherlands has VFS centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi. For a student from Punjab, Chandigarh is the natural choice. You attend once for biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) and to hand in your passport.

Because the university lodges the application, your part is to give the university a clean, complete file. That is where we work.

The money, in figures you can check

For living costs, the IND requires you to show €13,569.24 for a year of study. That is the figure on the IND's own income-requirements page, verified on 27 August 2026. Most universities ask you to transfer this sum to the university's account before they lodge your permit request. It is then paid back to you in monthly instalments after you arrive. This is separate from tuition.

Tuition at Dutch public universities for a non-EU student runs from roughly €9,000 to €30,000 a year, depending on the university and the programme. The lower "statutory" fee you may see quoted online is for EU students and does not apply to Indians. Each university sets its own "institutional" fee. To give you a sense: TU Delft, Eindhoven, Twente and Wageningen publish master's rates around €21,000 to €26,000 for 2026-27; Erasmus, Leiden, Amsterdam and Groningen span from about €13,500 for some bachelor's programmes up to €30,000 and beyond for medicine. The exact figure is on each university's page, and we check it on the call.

So for a one-year master's, plan tuition plus €13,569 plus your flight, insurance and a housing deposit. That is the honest total.

Language

English-taught programmes are available widely at bachelor's and master's level. The English test requirement is set by each university, not nationally. Most ask for IELTS or TOEFL at a level the programme states.

The core documents

• Admission letter from a recognised Dutch institution.
• Proof of the €13,569.24, usually a transfer to the university.
• Proof of tuition payment or payment plan, as the university requires.
• Passport, photos, and the antecedents certificate the IND asks for.
• Health insurance, which you must arrange after arrival; the university explains the rules.
• Academic transcripts and, where asked, a tuberculosis test declaration.

Where files from India go wrong for the Netherlands

Housing left for after arrival. Dutch cities have a shortage of student rooms. Students land, cannot register at an address, and cannot open a bank account or collect their residence card. Some universities will not even lodge the permit request until housing is confirmed. Start your room search the day you accept the offer.

Transferring the living-cost sum from a third person's account. The university wants to see the money come from you or your parent, with a clear trail. A transfer from an uncle's business account triggers questions.

Budgeting on the statutory fee. Students see €2,694 on a Dutch website and plan around it. That is the EU rate. The non-EU rate is many times higher.

Missing the university's own deadline for the permit request. The IND has its own timeline, and the university adds a buffer before that. Miss the university's cut-off and you miss the intake.

Gaps in the academic record with no note. A year between bachelor's and master's is fine if explained.

Refused? What to do

If the IND refuses the residence permit, you receive a written decision with reasons. You can object within four weeks, or the university can help you reapply. We read the decision, explain in plain language what went wrong, and prepare the objection or the fresh file. In practice, most Dutch refusals for Indian students come from money or document gaps, which can be repaired.

After graduation: information only

The Netherlands offers an orientation year for graduates to look for work. We explain what it is on the call. We do not file work permits or job-based visas, because that requires a licence we do not hold.
