The Netherlands is the destination for Indian students who want a European degree taught entirely in English — without learning a new language first. No country in continental Europe offers as many English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes, and Dutch universities are consistently among the best in the world for engineering, business, agriculture, water management and the sciences.
The Netherlands is an EU member and part of the Schengen Area, so a Dutch study visa also gives you short-stay mobility across the wider Schengen zone. After graduation, the country offers a well-known orientation year — a residence permit that lets you stay and look for skilled work.
For Indian families, the appeal is a strong, English-language degree from a globally respected system, in a compact, well-connected, safe country. Cities are bike-friendly and efficient, and the Indian community — especially around Amsterdam, Eindhoven and The Hague — is growing steadily.
The honest counterweights: tuition for non-EU students is real and moderate-to-high, the cost of living is not low, and the housing shortage — particularly in Amsterdam — is a genuine, well-documented problem that every applicant must plan around. Student work rights for non-EU students are also more restricted than in Canada or Australia.
The Netherlands suits a student who wants a high-quality, English-taught European degree and a real post-study work window — and who researches housing and budgets honestly before committing.
What a study visa for the Netherlands involves
The Dutch study route works differently from most: your university applies for your entry visa and residence permit on your behalf. Once you are admitted, the institution lodges the application for the entry visa (MVV) and the residence permit (VVR) with the Dutch immigration service. This makes choosing a recognised institution essential — they are your sponsor.
You must show proof of funds — the Netherlands sets a defined amount per month that you must have available for living costs — alongside your admission and health cover. Because the Netherlands is in the Schengen Area, your Dutch residence permit also allows short visits across the other Schengen countries during your studies.
The process is orderly and institution-led, but it rewards an early start: admission, the funds evidence and the residence-permit steps all take time, and the housing search should begin the moment you are admitted.

Where Indian students go in the Netherlands
Dutch universities are research-strong and globally ranked — Delft University of Technology, the University of Amsterdam, Eindhoven University of Technology, Utrecht University, Leiden University, Wageningen University and Erasmus University Rotterdam among them. The country is a leader in engineering, business, agriculture and the sciences, and almost all of these programmes are available in English.
Amsterdam is the largest hub but the most expensive, with the worst housing pressure. Rotterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven, Utrecht and Delft offer top universities at somewhat more manageable costs and remain superbly connected — the Netherlands is small and its train network is excellent. Choose the city for your programme and, realistically, for where you can actually find housing.
The Indian community in the Netherlands
The Indian community in the Netherlands is growing quickly, driven by students and skilled professionals, and concentrated around Amsterdam, Eindhoven, The Hague and Utrecht — Eindhoven in particular has a strong technology-sector Indian population.
Indian grocery stores, restaurants and community organisations are well established in the larger cities. The community is younger and smaller than in the UK or Canada, but visible and supportive. The climate is mild and wet, much like the UK — no harsh winter, but grey and damp, and a clear change from Punjab's sunshine.

Netherlands visa FAQs
Are programmes in the Netherlands taught in English? Yes — the Netherlands offers more English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes than anywhere else in continental Europe. You can complete a full degree without learning Dutch.
Who applies for my Dutch study visa? Your university. Once you are admitted, the institution lodges the entry visa and residence permit application with the Dutch immigration service as your sponsor.
How much money do I need for a Netherlands study visa? The Netherlands sets a defined monthly amount you must have available for living costs, on top of tuition. See our proof of funds guide.
Can I work while studying in the Netherlands? Work rights for non-EU students are limited — generally restricted hours and an employer-arranged work permit. Do not rely on part-time work to fund your studies.
Can I stay after my degree? Yes — the Netherlands offers an orientation year, a residence permit that lets graduates stay and look for skilled work.
Does a Dutch visa let me travel in Schengen? Yes. A Dutch residence permit allows short visits across the other Schengen countries while you study.
Is it hard to find housing in the Netherlands? Honestly, yes — especially in Amsterdam. There is a real housing shortage. Start your accommodation search the moment you are admitted, and budget realistically.
Do I need IELTS for the Netherlands? Yes, usually — Dutch universities require proof of English ability, commonly IELTS or TOEFL, to the level set by your programme.
How long does a Netherlands study visa take? Several weeks once your university lodges the application. Start early, because admission and the housing search both take time.
