A Netherlands visa from Punjab, without the Delhi trip

Maybe your company has sent you to a client in Amsterdam. Maybe your family wants to see the tulip fields in April. Or you are flying through Schiphol on the way somewhere else and want to stop for a few days. For all of these, you need a Schengen short-stay visa, and for many people in Punjab, the Netherlands has one big practical advantage: the visa centre in Chandigarh.

Let us walk through the visa in plain language. Then we will show you where Indian files for the Netherlands usually fail, and what to do if yours already has.

What a Schengen short-stay visa lets you do

The visa is called type C. It allows up to 90 days of stay inside any rolling 180-day period. The count runs across every Schengen country together. A week in the Netherlands, then a week in Belgium, then a week in Germany means 21 days used, not 7.

You apply to the Netherlands when it is the country where you will spend the most time. If your trip is split equally, you apply to the country you land in first. Schiphol is a huge hub, so many Indians land in Amsterdam and then travel on. Landing there does not by itself make the Netherlands your main destination. What matters is where you sleep most nights. Cost and timing in numbers

• Visa fee: €90 for each adult. Children aged 6 to 11 pay €45. Under 6, no fee.
• On top, VFS charges a service fee in rupees. Our fee calculator gives the total for your group.
• Earliest you can apply: six months before travel.
• Latest: 15 days before travel.
• Normal processing: 15 calendar days. Can go up to 45 if the consulate wants more documents.

The Netherlands has one of the largest VFS networks in India. Centres are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi. Documents: the plain list

Think of the file as three piles.

Pile one, who you are. Passport with two empty pages and at least three months validity after your planned exit. Photos to Schengen size. The application form, which we fill in with you.

Pile two, the trip. Return flight reservation. Hotel bookings for every night, or a host's letter with their address and a copy of their Dutch ID or residence card. Travel medical insurance for at least €30,000, valid in all Schengen countries. For business, a letter from your Indian employer stating your role and who pays, plus an invitation from the Dutch company.

Pile three, your reason to come home. Bank statements for the last six months. Salary slips or, if self-employed, GST returns and business registration. Property papers. Proof of family in India. Leave sanction from your employer.

We assemble all three piles, check every date and figure matches, and book the appointment. You go to the centre once for biometrics, which means fingerprints and a photo, and to hand in the passport.

Where files from India go wrong for the Netherlands

The Dutch consulate reads files closely. These are the errors we fix most often:

IT and corporate travellers with a weak employer letter. A generic HR letter that does not name the client, the dates or who pays for the trip leaves the officer guessing. We give you a template that answers every question.

Tulip-season and summer files sent too late. April and June are busy. A file lodged 16 days before travel with no room for a 45-day delay is a gamble.

Schiphol transit confusion. People stopping in Amsterdam for two nights on a longer trip elsewhere apply to the Netherlands because that is where the plane lands. If most nights are in another country, the file gets sent back or refused.

Hotel bookings that are already cancelled. Officers can check. A free-cancellation booking that you cancel before the decision is a mismatch.

Insurance dates that do not match the flights. The policy must start on the day you enter and end on or after the day you leave.

Refused? Here is the plan

Every Schengen refusal uses one standard sheet with 16 numbered grounds. The officer ticks the ones that apply. Our Schengen refusal reasons page explains each ground in one short paragraph.

For the Netherlands, you can lodge a written objection with the Dutch authorities within four weeks of the refusal. Or you can apply again. We do not push everyone toward the same option. We read your refusal sheet and your original file, find the gap, and tell you which route gives you the better chance. Often the fix is a clearer employer letter, a better explanation of a bank entry, or proof of a property that was never included.
