Belgium Study & Research Visa — overview
The Belgium Study & Research Visa is for study, research or an internship in Belgium. Short stays of up to 90 days use a Schengen Type C visa; longer study requires a national long-stay visa or residence permit.
Beyond the standard Schengen documents, the embassy expects a certificate of admission or registration at an educational establishment in Belgium, or a cover letter from the inviting institution.

Belgium is a small country with big universities. KU Leuven, Ghent, Antwerp, VUB and Hasselt sit in the Dutch-speaking north (Flanders). UCLouvain, ULB and Liège sit in the French-speaking south (Wallonia) and Brussels. For an Indian student this matters, because tuition, language and even some procedures differ by region. What does not differ is the visa: a national long-stay visa lodged with Belgium.
Here is what you need to know, said simply.
The visa
A stay longer than 90 days for study needs a type D visa, Belgium's own long-stay visa. It is applied for at the Belgian consulate through VFS Global. After arrival you register with the local commune and receive a residence card.
Belgium's VFS centres in India are in Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi. From Punjab, use New Delhi. You attend once for biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and to hand in your passport.
The verified money figures
For living costs, Belgium requires proof of €1,062 a month. That figure comes from the Belgian minister's announcement of the raised minimum for non-EU students and the blocked-account rules published by Liège, checked on 27 August 2026. Our confidence is medium: the sources agree, but the figure is reset periodically, so we check it again before filing. There are three accepted ways to show it: a blocked account at the university (where offered), a scholarship, or a formal financial guarantor who signs a commitment form.
Tuition at Belgian public universities for a non-EU student sits between about €3,900 and €9,494 a year. The spread comes from the two regions setting rules separately, and from faculties within each university. For example: KU Leuven charges non-EEA students a fixed amount plus a per-credit rate that adds up to about €9,494 for a 60-credit year in 2026-27; Ghent has two bands, about €2,297 for arts, law and psychology and €7,079 for science, engineering, economics and health; Antwerp lists €4,300 for a bachelor's and €7,800 for a master's; Hasselt has three bands from €3,900 to €9,494; VUB charges €4,800 to €5,720. UCLouvain, ULB and Liège in the French community charge about €5,369 a year. We check the exact figure for your programme on the university's page.
Language
English-taught programmes are widely available, especially at master's level. The usual English requirement is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 79, though individual programmes can set their own. Bachelor's programmes in English are fewer; many are in Dutch or French.
What goes in the file
- Admission letter from a recognised Belgian institution.
- Proof of the €1,062 a month: blocked account confirmation, scholarship letter, or the guarantor form with the guarantor's income proof.
- Proof of tuition payment as required.
- Health insurance arrangement.
- Medical certificate from a doctor approved by the Belgian consulate.
- Police clearance certificate.
- Passport, photos, the type D form, academic certificates.

Where files from India go wrong for Belgium
The guarantor route done carelessly. A parent can be your guarantor, but the form must be completed properly and their income must clearly cover €1,062 a month on top of their own family's expenses. A guarantor with a thin income is a refusal reason.
Using the medical certificate from any doctor. The Belgian consulate accepts certificates only from doctors on its approved list. A certificate from your family doctor is rejected.
Confusing the two regions. A student admitted to UCLouvain who reads KU Leuven's fee page budgets wrongly, and the reverse. The names are similar; the universities are not.
Assuming a bachelor's will be in English. Many are not. We check the language of your exact programme before anything else.
Police clearance ordered too late. It can take weeks in India. Start it the day you accept the admission.
If Belgium refused
A refusal on a type D visa comes with a written reason. You may appeal to the Council for Alien Law Litigation within the period stated, or reapply. For a student with an intake date, a quick reapplication with the gap closed is often the sensible move. We read the decision with you, tell you which route we would take, and rebuild the file to answer the exact reason given.
After graduation: information only
Belgium offers a search year for graduates to look for work. We explain it on the call. We do not file work permits; that requires a separate MEA licence which we do not hold.
