Belgium Family & Friends Visit Visa — overview
A Belgian family or private visit visa is a short-stay Schengen visa (Type C): up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Belgium calls the person you are visiting your guarantor, and where they are paying for the trip, their guarantee is a formal document legalised by their own municipality.
Belgium is also unusually open about what it is assessing. Its checklist carries a section headed "guarantees for return", asking you to document your family background, your work, your income and any land or property — because that is what it uses to judge whether you will leave the Schengen area before the visa expires.
Belgium tells you what it is testing — so answer it
Most embassies leave you to guess what a refusal would turn on. Belgium prints it. Its checklist has a section headed "Guarantees for return (assessment of migration risk)", and asks you to provide "as much information as possible" on:
- your family background — proof of family bonds in your home country;
- your professional and socio-economic status;
- regular income and stable revenue, yours and/or your spouse's;
- ownership of land or real estate.
It then says why: this information is essential to correctly judge the intention of the applicant to leave the Schengen area before the expiry of the visa.
For a family from Punjab this is good news, because it is exactly the evidence you tend to have — a home, land, a pension, children and grandchildren here. We build that section deliberately rather than leaving it to a bank statement: jamabandi or property papers, pension orders, the family's presence in India, and a short note tying it together.
Your host is a "guarantor", and the paperwork is formal
When the person in Belgium is financing the entire trip, Belgium asks for:
- the original guarantee letter under article 3bis of the law of 15 December 1980, legalised by the municipality where they live, plus a copy;
- a copy of their ID card or residence permit, showing the right to reside in Belgium for an unlimited period;
- their family composition, issued by the same municipality;
- proof of recent income — three salary slips plus child benefits, or the latest Belgian tax assessment.
The legalisation and the family composition both come from the guarantor's municipality, so their part has to start first. Whether or not they are paying, the guarantor also writes an invitation giving the purpose, their address, phone, e-mail and the dates.
Rules that are easy to trip over
- Apply at least one month before travel.
- The purpose cannot be changed later, and the visa cannot be prolonged in Belgium — either means a fresh application.
- The photograph is glued to the form (5 × 3 cm, white background).
- A minor travelling alone or with one parent needs a notary affidavit of consent that has been apostilled.
- Insurance must come from the embassy's list of recognised insurers.
- Bring your old passport — Belgium says previous trips can be useful for the decision.

Passport
Valid at least 3 months after the end of the planned journey, with a copy of the identity page and of your most recent Schengen visa with its stamps.
Application form with photograph
Completed and signed, with one recent colour photograph (5 × 3 cm, white background) glued to the form.
Invitation from your guarantor in Belgium
Stating the purpose of the stay, their address, telephone number and e-mail address, and the period of stay of the guest or guests.
If the guarantor is financing the whole trip — guarantee letter
The original guarantee letter under article 3bis of the law of 15 December 1980, legalised by the municipality where the guarantor lives, plus one copy.
Guarantor's right to reside
A copy of their ID card or residence permit, showing the right to reside in Belgium for an unlimited period.
Guarantor's family composition
The family composition document, issued by the municipality where the guarantor lives.
Guarantor's recent income
The last three salary slips plus child benefits, or the last income-tax assessment from the Belgian tax department.
Your employment or status
A letter from your employer stating your income and the leave you are allowed; or your registration in the commerce register or as a partner in a company; or, for a student, a certificate from the school stating the holidays allowed.
Proof of family relationship
Required for a family visit.
Your own financial means
Bank statements for the latest three months, income-tax papers and salary slips.
Travel insurance
Valid in Belgium and the other Schengen countries, minimum cover EUR 30,000, from an insurer on the embassy's recognised list.
Ticket reservation
A copy of the reservation.
For minors
A child under 18 travelling alone or with only one parent needs a notary affidavit of the parents' consent — and Belgium requires that affidavit to be apostilled.
