Germany Airport Transit Visa — overview
The Germany Airport Transit Visa allows a short stopover in the international transit area of a German airport, without leaving that area or staying overnight. Indian nationals generally require an airport transit visa for the Schengen area.
Some travellers are exempt — for example, Indian nationals holding a valid Schengen visa or residence permit, or a valid visa or residence permit for Canada, Japan, the USA or the UK, among others. If you need to leave the international transit area, a regular Schengen visa is required instead.

Germany airport transit visa for Indian passport holders
The German Embassy's checklist (July 2024) is explicit: "Indian nationals generally require an airport transit visa for the Schengen area. This visa allows a short stopover at an international airport only, without leaving the airport's international transit area or overnight stay in a hotel. If you need to leave the international transit area (e.g. in order to catch a connecting flight at another airport to leave the Schengen area), please apply for a regular Schengen visa."
Who is exempt
The checklist lists as generally not requiring an airport transit visa: Indian nationals "holding a valid visa or residence permit from a member state of the Schengen area or Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, Liechtenstein, Ireland, Canada, Japan, USA (except for holders of an US Advanced Parole Document) or holders of a valid UK Biometric Residence Permit"; holders of a valid residence permit for Andorra, Monaco or San Marino; and diplomatic passport holders. A visa in an expired passport does not help; the exemption follows the valid document.
Required documents
- The completely filled and signed Schengen visa application form, with the documents the checklist lists for transit: passport, photograph, the onward ticket showing the connection through a German airport, and the visa or entry permission for the destination country where one is needed.
- Copies of every original; the visa section "does not return original documents if you do not provide a copy".
Applications are lodged through VFS Global for the German mission with jurisdiction over your state; Punjab falls under the Embassy in New Delhi.

Issued within 10 years, valid beyond your transit, with empty pages to affix the visa.

Recent 35x45mm biometric photos on a white background, not older than 6 months.
Confirmed onward flights
Flight bookings showing the stopover in Germany and your onward journey out of the Schengen Area.
Destination-country entry document
A visa or entry document for your final destination country, where one is required.
Travel medical insurance
Valid travel health insurance — required even for transit cases.
