Gurpreet had flown to London twice before, and both times he did the same nervous thing at the airport: open his passport to the visa page and check the sticker was really there. On his third trip, in March 2026, he flipped to the page — and froze. The sticker was gone. For one cold second, he was sure he had ruined the entire trip.
He had not. From 25 February 2026, the UK simply stopped putting stickers in passports at all. Your permission to enter Britain now lives entirely on a screen — no paper, no stamp. For most Indians that is good news, but only if you know how it works.
What exactly changed?
The UK has switched to a fully digital visa system. If you are an Indian who needs a UK visa — visitor, student, family — you now apply online and receive an eVisa: a digital immigration status linked to your passport. You no longer hand over your passport to get a sticker glued inside it.
- The old way — you submitted your passport, waited, and got it back with a printed visa label inside. Lose the passport, lose the visa.
- The new way — your visa is a digital record in your online UKVI account. Nothing is stuck in your passport. You view and share it online.
Do not confuse the eVisa with the ETA. You will hear about the UK "ETA" too. That is a travel permit for people from visa-free countries. Indians are not visa-free — you still need a full UK visa, now issued as an eVisa. The ETA is not your route, so do not apply for the wrong thing.
What this means for you
The switch brings real benefits: no surrendering your passport for weeks, nothing to physically lose or damage, and you can prove your status instantly from your phone. The watch-outs are simple — your visa now lives in an online UKVI account, so you must be able to log in, keep your current passport linked to it, and share your status with airlines when asked. No account access at the airport can mean trouble, so set it up properly before you fly.
How to access and show your eVisa
- Create your UKVI account. After your visa is granted, set up (or log into) your online UK Visas and Immigration account.
- Link your passport. Connect the exact passport you will travel on. If you renew your passport, update it in the account.
- Share a code when needed. Generate a "share code" to prove your status to airlines or carriers before boarding.
- Travel with your passport. Always carry the passport linked to your eVisa — that passport is your key at the border.
Did the fee change too?
Going digital is separate from cost — but yes, UK fees also rose in April 2026. A standard 6-month visitor visa is now around £135 (about ₹14,500), with longer multi-year visit visas also available. As always, the fee is non-refundable even if you are refused — so a clean, well-prepared application matters more than ever.
As for Gurpreet, he boarded without a single sticker, his visa sitting safely in his phone, and walked into London right on time. The sticker era is over; the screen era is genuinely easier, once you are ready for it.
Quick answers
Do Indians need a UK visa in 2026?
Yes — now issued as a digital eVisa. There is no visa on arrival.
Is the ETA the same as an eVisa?
No. The ETA is for visa-free nationalities. Indians need a full eVisa, not an ETA.
Will my passport be stamped?
No physical sticker anymore. Your visa is a digital status linked to your passport.
How do I show my visa at the airport?
Through your online UKVI account and a share code for carriers. Always carry the linked passport.
