The short answer
Two routes. The Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa allows up to 6 months at a time, to a total of 18 months in 3 years. The Parent Boost Visitor Visa is a multi-entry visa of up to 5 years, but it carries a sponsor income test and compulsory insurance with stated minimum cover.

The official rules
Immigration New Zealand requires the parent to be sponsored by their child or grandchild (or, for the visitor visa, the parent of their child or grandchild), and the sponsor must be a New Zealand citizen or resident. Sponsorship is a formal undertaking, not a courtesy letter.
The Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa is for parents who live abroad and visit. It is a visitor visa: it does not lead to residence and does not replace the Parent Resident Visa category.
INZ states that you or your sponsor will need to pay for any health care your parents need in New Zealand. On the visitor visa, full medical insurance is recommended; on Parent Boost, insurance with the stated minimum cover is a condition.
The income threshold has to be met in 2 of the last 3 completed tax years, so a recent pay rise alone does not qualify you. It is the New Zealand tax record that is assessed — not your parents’ savings in India.
Two countries, one file
A typical file, not an official checklist — what is needed depends on your parents’ circumstances.
How we prepare the file
Parent Boost costs roughly seven times more in government fees before insurance, and the fee is at risk if the income evidence falls short. We check your last three tax years against the threshold first. If it is marginal, the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa usually gets your parents there sooner and with far less exposed.
For parents in their sixties and seventies, a policy meeting Parent Boost’s minimum cover is often the largest cost in the whole plan — and pre-existing conditions change it sharply. Get a real quotation for their ages and health before choosing the route.
The chest X-ray and medical examination are completed by your parents here, at a clinic on INZ’s panel. We book this early: a finding that needs a follow-up test is the most common reason a file stalls, and it is far easier to deal with before lodging.
Sponsorship does not remove the visitor test. The file still has to show a life in India that your parents will return to — home, land, pension, other family — especially when the stay requested is long.
No consultancy can promise a visa — the decision belongs to the visa officer. What we control is whether the file is complete, consistent and honest.
If you are a New Zealand citizen or resident, your parents can apply for the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa (up to 6 months at a time, 18 months in 3 years) or the Parent Boost Visitor Visa (multi-entry, up to 5 years). You sponsor them in both.
Immigration New Zealand’s published minimum is NZD $72,800 a year for one sponsor supporting one parent, or NZD $109,200 for joint sponsors supporting one parent, earned in 2 of the last 3 completed tax years. The government fee is from NZD $441 for the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa and from NZD $3,100 for the Parent Boost Visitor Visa, as published by Immigration New Zealand on the date shown on this page. Medicals, insurance and our consultancy fee are separate.
For the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, INZ recommends full medical insurance and makes clear that you or your sponsor pay for any health care. For Parent Boost, insurance valid for at least 1 year is required, with stated minimums including NZD $250,000 a year for emergency medical care and NZD $250,000 for repatriation.
No. Both are visitor visas. Parent Boost allows long stays over up to 5 years but it is not residence. Permanent settlement is a separate residence category with its own rules.
