IT Employees on Deputation: Why a Company Letter Is Not the Same as an NOC
Your company issues plenty of letters. Most of them do not say the one thing a visa officer is looking for — that your job, and your return, are both real.
IT companies are good at letters. HR portals generate employment letters, address proofs, deputation letters and travel authorisations in a couple of clicks.
Almost none of them are written for a visa officer, and one of the commonest problems we see in this group is an applicant who submitted three company letters and still had no document that did the job.
At a glance
Three letters
Employment · deputation / travel · NOC
Only the NOC
States sanctioned dates and that your post is held
Business visitor covers
Meetings, training, negotiation, conferences
It does not cover
Employment abroad or long-term billable delivery
Outside our licence
Work routes — they need an MEA RA licence
Family
Filed alongside you, documented once, not three times
Three letters, three different jobs
Three company letters can still leave the one question unanswered.
What each one proves
Employment letter — that you work there, in a role, for a salary
Deputation / travel letter — that the company is sending you, and why
NOC — that the company has no objection, and that your post is held for your return
What none of them proves on its own
That you are coming back — unless the return line is actually written
That your dates are sanctioned — unless the dates are actually stated
The third one is the document that answers the officer's real question, and it is the one HR portals least often produce.
“
An employment letter says you have a job. An NOC says you have a job to come back to. Those are not the same claim.
The line that has to be there
Whatever your company calls the document, it should state:
1
Your full name as spelled in your passport
Not your display name, not initials. The officer is matching a letter to a passport.
2
Designation, employee ID, and date of joining
Length of service is stability, and stability is a tie.
3
Exact approved dates of travel
From and to, in full — and they must match your itinerary and your form.
4
An explicit no-objection to the travel
One plain sentence.
5
That your position is held and you resume on a stated date
The sentence most often missing, and the one carrying the most weight.
6
A signatory who can be reached
Name, designation, institutional email, direct number. On letterhead.
The line that matters more: travel versus work
Where our licence ends. Filing under the wrong category is a refusal you carry for years.
This is where IT applicants get into genuine trouble, and it is worth being blunt.
A business visitor visa covers meetings, client discussions, training, negotiations, conferences and internal reviews. It does not cover taking up employment abroad, delivering billable work at a client site over a long period, or an assignment that is in substance a job.
Where the line falls differs by country, and the consequences of crossing it are serious and long-lasting. If your assignment is genuinely a work posting, the correct route is a work visa — and we do not file those. Work routes need a Ministry of External Affairs Recruiting Agent licence under the Emigration Act, which this firm does not hold.
What a strong IT business-travel file looks like
Property, family and ongoing commitments — consistently underused by salaried applicants.
Documents that work together
Company NOCThe core document
Dates, no objection, position held, return date
Invitation from the host entityFrom the client or overseas office
Who is inviting, why, for how long, who pays
Purpose letter from your employerMust match the invitation exactly
What you will be doing, in plain terms
Payslips and Form 16Income, not just balance
Six months, matching your bank credits
Bank statementSteady credits tell the story on their own
Six months of the salary account
TiesUnderused by salaried applicants
Property, family, ongoing commitments in India
Every date and name across those documents has to agree. That reconciliation is a fixed step, and it is where most salaried files quietly fail — we wrote about it separately: where the leave order, NOC and form stop matching.
Travelling with family
Spouse and children are filed alongside you, with the relationship and funding documented once rather than three times in three slightly different versions. That single-story approach is what prevents the partial refusals families collect when each application is built separately.
Questions IT employees ask
Often not on its own. A deputation letter explains why the company is sending you; it frequently says nothing about sanctioned dates or your return. Ask for those two additions, or carry a separate NOC that has them.
No, and treating them as interchangeable is the most damaging mistake in this category. A business visitor visa is for meetings, training and negotiations. Employment abroad needs a work route, which we do not file — it requires an MEA Recruiting Agent licence we do not hold.
Who is inviting you, the legal entity and their address, the purpose, exact dates, and precisely which costs they cover. A vague hosting letter is weaker than a short specific one.
Show the chain honestly: your actual employer's letter, your payslips from that entity, and a line explaining the deployment. The problem is never the arrangement — it is an officer discovering a structure your documents did not mention.
Usually not, if the company is sending you — but there must still be a document stating the approved travel dates. "Approved travel" and "sanctioned leave" are different, and either works as long as the dates are explicit and consistent.
One person, start to finish. The Lifeset Corporate & Government Desk drafts the NOC in the wording embassies expect, reconciles it against your itinerary and form, and tells you plainly when what you actually need is a route we are not licensed to file.
