Does your child in Canada earn enough?
To bring parents or grandparents on a Super Visa, the child or grandchild in Canada must show a minimum income for the whole family — including the parents being invited. Check it in ten seconds.
Indicative planning tool. The minimum-income table is set by IRCC and refreshed periodically — verify the current figures on canada.ca before you file.
The host’s side
Two questions.
The host is the child or grandchild in Canada who invites the parents or grandparents. They must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian.
Who to count
- The host
- The host’s spouse/partner and dependent children
- The parents or grandparents being invited — both, if both are coming
- Any dependants of theirs
Getting this count wrong is the most common mistake — it changes the income you must show.
Why the Super Visa
Years, not months.
10 years
Maximum validity, multiple entry
5 years
Maximum stay per visit
+2 years
Possible extension from inside Canada
A regular visitor visa usually gets your parents six months at a time. A Super Visa is built for families — which is exactly why so many Punjab households apply for the wrong one, wait months, and then have to start again.
What changed on 31 March 2026
IRCC changed how the income is calculated, not the amounts. The host can now use either of the two tax years before applying, and the visiting parents’ own income may be added to make up a shortfall — once the host independently meets a required minimum share of the threshold. If the calculator says you are short, that is now the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it.

FAQs
- What income is needed to sponsor a Super Visa?
- The inviting child or grandchild (the host) must meet a minimum necessary income based on LICO plus 30%, which rises with family size. For a family of three it is CAD 46,720, and for a family of four CAD 56,724, per the table IRCC last updated on 29 July 2025 and which applies to 2026 applications. Check the current table on canada.ca before you file.
- Who counts in the family size?
- The host, the host’s spouse or partner and dependent children, AND the parents or grandparents being invited — both of them if both are coming — plus any dependants of theirs. Miscounting this is the most common mistake, because it changes the income threshold you must meet.
- What if the host does not earn enough?
- A shortfall is not automatically a refusal. A change effective 31 March 2026 altered how income is assessed — the host may now qualify using either of the two tax years before applying, and the visiting parents’ or grandparents’ own income can be added to top up a shortfall, once the host independently meets a required minimum share of the threshold. The dollar thresholds themselves did not change. It is worth a conversation before assuming you do not qualify.
- What medical insurance is required for a Super Visa?
- At least CAD 100,000 of emergency medical coverage for health care, hospitalisation and repatriation, valid for a minimum of one year from the date of entry, and valid on each entry to Canada. Crucially, IRCC does not accept an insurance quote — you must show the policy has been purchased and paid for. Insurance from an approved non-Canadian insurer is now accepted, provided the insurer is authorised by OSFI to provide accident-and-sickness insurance.
- How long can my parents stay on a Super Visa?
- A Super Visa can be valid for up to 10 years with multiple entries, and a border officer may authorise a stay of up to 5 years per visit. From within Canada, a further extension of up to 2 years can be applied for. This is what makes it so much better than a regular visitor visa for parents.
- Who can be the host?
- A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian. The host signs the invitation letter and provides the proof of income and their commitment to financially support the visiting parent or grandparent.
