Portugal has become one of the most talked-about destinations in Europe for Indian students and families — and for good reason. It combines respected universities, a moderate cost of living by Western European standards, a warm Atlantic-Mediterranean climate, and a reputation as one of the friendliest, safest countries in the EU.
Portugal is an EU member and part of the Schengen Area, so a Portuguese study visa also gives you short-stay mobility across the wider Schengen zone. After graduation, students can stay on to look for work, and Portugal's overall residence pathway is regarded as one of the more accessible in Western Europe.
For Indian families, the appeal is balance: a genuine European degree without the extreme costs of Switzerland or the Nordics, in a country whose climate and pace of life are an easy adjustment from Punjab. English-taught master's programmes are growing, and Portugal has seen a notable rise in its South Asian community in recent years.
The honest counterweights: most undergraduate teaching is in Portuguese, English options are concentrated at master's level, and while Lisbon and Porto are affordable by Western European standards, their housing costs have risen sharply. The graduate job market is also smaller than Germany's or the Netherlands'.
Portugal suits a student who wants an affordable, well-regarded European degree in a warm, welcoming country — and who is open to learning Portuguese for daily life and work.
What a study visa for Portugal involves
Indian students apply for a Portuguese long-stay study visa once they hold an admission from a recognised Portuguese institution. The application goes through the Portuguese mission.
You must show proof of funds — Portugal's requirement is broadly aligned with its minimum-wage level for the period of study — alongside your admission, accommodation and health cover. After arrival, you complete your residence formalities locally.
Because Portugal is in the Schengen Area, your Portuguese study visa also allows short visits across the other Schengen countries while you study.
The Portuguese process is document-focused; it rewards a complete, properly prepared file and an early start, since admission and the visa appointment both take time.

Where Indian students go in Portugal
Portugal's universities are respected and increasingly international. The University of Lisbon and the University of Porto are the large research flagships; NOVA University Lisbon is strong in business, technology and the social sciences; and the University of Coimbra is one of the oldest universities in Europe.
Lisbon is the capital and the largest hub, with the most English-taught programmes and the widest job market — and the highest housing costs. Porto offers a strong university scene at a somewhat lower cost, while Coimbra and Braga are classic, affordable student cities. Choose the city for your course and your housing budget.
The Indian community in Portugal
Portugal's South Asian and Indian community has grown markedly in recent years, concentrated in Lisbon and in agricultural regions, with a visible Punjabi presence and gurdwara activity in and around the capital.
Indian grocery stores, restaurants and community spaces are well established in Lisbon and present in Porto, and the community is younger and faster-growing than in many other Western European countries. The climate is one of Portugal's strongest cards — warm, sunny and gentle, among the easiest adjustments from Punjab of any European destination.

Portugal visa FAQs
Are courses in Portugal taught in English? Many master's programmes are, and the number is growing. Most undergraduate teaching is in Portuguese, so for a bachelor's degree and for daily life the language matters.
How much money do I need for a Portugal study visa? Portugal's funds requirement is broadly aligned with its minimum-wage level for your period of study, on top of tuition. See our proof of funds guide.
Is Portugal affordable? By Western European standards, yes — tuition is moderate and living costs are lower than in north-west Europe. But housing in Lisbon and Porto has become more expensive, so budget for it.
Do I need to know Portuguese? For an English-taught master's you can start without it, but daily life and most jobs run in Portuguese. For a long-term plan, learning it is essential.
Can I work while studying in Portugal? Students can work part-time alongside their studies, with the appropriate authorisation. Treat work as support, not as funding.
Can I stay in Portugal after my degree? Yes — graduates can stay on to look for work, and Portugal's broader residence pathway is regarded as relatively accessible.
Does a Portuguese visa let me travel in Schengen? Yes. A Portuguese long-stay study visa allows short visits across the other Schengen countries while you study.
Do I need IELTS for Portugal? For English-taught programmes, yes — usually IELTS or TOEFL to the level your programme sets. Portuguese-taught programmes require Portuguese-language proof.
How long does a Portugal study visa take? Several weeks, sometimes longer, depending on the mission and your file. Apply well before your course start date.
