Portugal Business Visa — overview

A Portuguese business or conference visa is a short-stay Schengen visa (Type C): up to 90 days in any 180-day period. From Punjab it is decided by the Consular Section of the Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi, which strongly advises applying at least one month before travel.

Portugal's checklist is candid about how it works. A booked flight does not speed anything up. The embassy is not obliged to ask for a missing document before refusing. And if any embassy has refused you a visa in the last two years, Portugal wants the refusal notice or a written explanation of the reasons with your file.

Portugal says out loud what other embassies leave unsaid

Three sentences on the New Delhi checklist set the tone for the whole application.

"A booked flight ticket does not result in a preferred processing of the application." Buying the ticket to create urgency does not work. The embassy instead highly advises applying at least one month before travel.

The Consular Section "is not obliged to ask for submittal of documents already mentioned on this list before denying an application." In other words, an incomplete file is not returned for completion — it can simply be refused. There is no second bite.

Submission "does not guarantee that a visa is granted." Nobody can promise an outcome, and Portugal does not pretend otherwise.

Taken together they mean one thing: the file has to be complete and correct on the day it goes in.

If you have been refused before — by anyone

Portugal asks a question most countries only ask on the form: if any embassy or high commission has refused you a visa in the last 2 years, include the refusal notice or a written explanation of the reasons.

Hiding an earlier refusal is the worst option — Schengen states share that information. The better course is to submit the notice and use the personal covering letter to show what has changed since: the new employment, the corrected documents, the clearer purpose. Going on to the UK, USA or Canada?

If your trip continues to a third country after the Schengen area, that country's visa has to be obtained first. Valid UK, US or Canadian visas you already hold go in as photocopies and help your file.

Two photographs: one pasted on the form, one clipped to the last page of the passport. Stapled or pinned photographs are not accepted.

Documents you need

Application form — one per applicant, every page
The free Schengen form, filled in and signed individually by each applicant, with all pages submitted. Documents go in the exact order listed, unstapled, all on A4.
Passport
Issued within the last 10 years, valid at least 3 months after the scheduled return, at least two empty pages. Passports with observations on the front data page are not accepted, nor handwritten Indian passports or those with a manual entry after 1 April 2010 changing the biographical data.
Previous passports
All of them, whatever their condition, bound together with a rubber band — not stapled. If one was lost, a note is required.
Previous Schengen visas
Clear photocopies of all previous Schengen visas; if they are in another passport, add copies of that passport's first and last pages.
Valid UK, USA or Canada visas
Clear photocopies, if you hold any. If you are travelling on to a third country after the Schengen area, that country's visa must be obtained first.
Previous refusals
If any embassy or high commission has refused you a visa in the last 2 years: the refusal notice, or a written explanation of the reasons.
Two photographs
White background, under 6 months old, 35–40 mm wide, original prints. One is pasted on the application; the other is clipped to the last page of the passport. Stapled or pinned pictures cannot be accepted.
Personal covering letter — original
In which you explain why you are applying for a Schengen business or conference visa.
Proof of legal residence, if applicable
For applicants who are not nationals of India, Bhutan or Nepal: a residence permit for one of those countries.
