Portugal Tourist Visa — overview
The Portugal Tourist Visa is a short-stay Schengen visa (Type C) for tourism and holidays, valid for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area.
Applications from India are submitted through VFS Global and decided by the Portugal embassy. Schengen-wide travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 is mandatory, and the application turns on a clear travel plan, sound finances and genuine ties to India.

Lisbon first as a visitor, then decide about the longer plan
Many Indian families who call us about Portugal are not just planning a holiday. They have read about the Golden Visa or the D7 residence route, and they want to see Lisbon, Porto or the Algarve with their own eyes before they commit money. Others simply want the coast, the food and the tram rides. In both cases, the first document is the same: a short-stay Schengen visa from Portugal.

What the visa allows
A Schengen type C visa lets you stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The days count across every Schengen country, not just Portugal. Lisbon plus Madrid on one trip draws from the same 90.
You apply to Portugal when Portugal is your main destination by nights. If nights are equal, the first country you enter is where you apply. A Lisbon and Seville trip needs this check done carefully.
Cost, timing and where to go
- Adult fee €90. Children aged 6 to 11 pay €45. Under 6 pay nothing.
- VFS service fee on top, paid in rupees. Total it with our fee calculator.
- Apply between six months and 15 days before travel.
- Standard processing: 15 calendar days. May extend to 45.
Portugal's VFS Global centres are in Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi. The Goa centre reflects the long history between Portugal and Goa, and Goan families use it heavily. The file, described simply
- Passport valid for three months after your exit date, with two blank pages.
- Completed Schengen form and photos.
- Return flight reservation.
- Where you sleep each night: hotels, or a host's letter with their Portuguese ID copy.
- Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000, valid across all Schengen countries.
- Bank statements, six months, plus salary or business income.
- Proof you will come back: employer's leave letter, property, business, family in India.
We prepare and check the whole file and book your appointment. You attend the centre once for biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and hand over the passport.
Where files from India go wrong for Portugal
Saying "property research" on a tourist visa without care. It is fine to look at property as a tourist. It is not fine to give the officer a reason to think you plan to stay past 90 days. The file must show a clear return date, a return ticket and strong ties. We word the cover letter so the purpose is honest and the return is obvious.
Mixing the visitor file with residence paperwork. People attach bank proofs, investment plans and lawyer letters meant for a future D7 or Golden Visa. That confuses a short-stay officer. Keep the visitor file a visitor file.
Algarve stays with no address. A villa rented from a private owner often comes with an email, not a booking. We turn it into a proper accommodation proof with the owner's details and dates.
Spain and Portugal on one trip, filed with Portugal because it sounded easier. If Spain has more nights, Spain is the correct country.
Older applicants with income from rent or pension not shown properly. Rent agreements, pension statements and FD interest all count, but they must be in the file in a form the officer can read quickly.
If Portugal refused you
The refusal sheet is the standard Schengen form with 16 numbered grounds. Each ground is explained in short words on our Schengen refusal reasons page.
Portugal allows an administrative appeal within the period stated on the sheet. A new application is also possible at any time. When someone is refused on ground 10 (doubt that you will leave) after mentioning property interest, we usually advise a fresh file with a cleaner statement of purpose and much stronger ties, rather than an appeal. We read your sheet and your original file first, then advise.

Completely filled and signed by the applicant.
Valid passport
Issued within the last 10 years, valid at least 3 months beyond your return, with 2 empty pages.
Photographs
Two recent ICAO-standard colour photos on a white background, not older than 6 months.
Cover letter
Stating the purpose and duration of travel, accompanying persons, and transport and accommodation details.
Transport & accommodation
Proof of means of transport and itinerary, a round-trip flight reservation, and confirmed accommodation for the full stay.
Travel medical insurance
Schengen-wide cover of at least EUR 30,000 for the entire trip.
Financial means
Original bank statements for the last 3 months and income-tax returns for the last 2 assessment years.
Proof of occupation
Employed: 3 months pay slips, employment contract and leave approval. Self-employed: company registration and GST. Retired: pension statements.

Insurance that expires with the return flight rather than the visa period is one of the most avoidable refusals on the entire form.
It can, and it is one of the few genuinely Portugal-specific advantages an Indian applicant may hold — but only when it is explained.

Applicants in this position often leave the connection implied. Stated plainly and evidenced, it answers the consulate's question about why Portugal before it is asked.
Yes. A Schengen refusal carries a right of appeal, and the standard form must print the governing national law, the authority and the deadline.
Read the bottom of your own letter before doing anything else. That window is short and it is set by Portugal, not by an EU-wide rule.

Treating one as the other is the commonest reason a second application fails identically.
