Cyprus Family & Friends Visit Visa

First, the visa itself: Cyprus is not Schengen

People planning a family visit to Cyprus often assume it works like Greece or Malta. It does not. Cyprus is a member of the European Union but sits outside the Schengen Area, and it issues its own national visa. Two practical consequences:

• a Schengen visa in your passport is not the visa for this trip;
• a Cypriot visa is for Cyprus — it is not a way into the Schengen states.

If the plan is Cyprus plus Greece, that is two separate visa questions, and it is better to know that before the flights are booked.

Most of the work happens in Cyprus

On a family visit, three documents come from your host, and two of them carry an official stamp or seal:

1. Invitation letter from the relative or friend you are visiting.
2. Assumption of Responsibility, signed by the host and notarised.
3. Bank guarantee from the host, stamped by the Migration Department.

The third is the one that surprises families. It is not a bank statement and it is not a sponsorship letter — it is a bank guarantee your host arranges and has stamped by Cyprus's Migration Department. Only your host can do it, only in Cyprus, and until it is in your hands the application in India cannot be completed. Ask them to start there.

Your side of the file

Cyprus's list for the applicant is short, but it has its own details:

• Two photographs, each signed on the back.
• An original bank statement for the last three months.
• Tax declarations for the last three years — a year more than many Schengen checklists.
• A letter from your employer — or, if you are retired, self-employed or a homemaker, your own letter of explanation setting out who you are and why you are travelling.
• Medical travel insurance of at least EUR 30,000, valid for the whole stay in Cyprus.
• A two-way flight itinerary.

Why we read the host's documents before yours

The name on the Assumption of Responsibility, the bank guarantee, the invitation and your passport has to be the same person spelled the same way, and the dates in the invitation have to match your itinerary. When the Cypriot documents are prepared by a busy relative and the Indian ones by the applicant, those small mismatches are where queries come from. We check the four against each other before anything is submitted.
