Cyprus visa guideCyprus is an EU member but is not part of the Schengen Area. A Cyprus visa does not let you travel on to Schengen countries, and time spent here is counted separately from your Schengen 90/180 days.
A family visit to Cyprus needs a Cyprus national short-stay visa, valid only for Cyprus, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, unless the traveller already holds a valid Schengen visa for two or multiple entries, which Cyprus accepts. Applications go through VFS Global, including Chandigarh and Jalandhar, and the High Commission of Cyprus in New Delhi decides, normally in 10 to 15 working days.
Much of the file comes from the host in Cyprus: an invitation with their full address and occupation, an Assumption of Responsibility form certified by a notary, and a bank letter stamped by the Migration Department in Nicosia.
Do Indians need a visa to visit family in Cyprus, and which one?
In most cases, yes. Visiting a daughter studying in Nicosia, a brother working in Limassol or friends in Larnaca needs a Cyprus national short-stay visa, which VFS lists under "Visiting Family and Friends". Cyprus belongs to the EU but has not yet joined the Schengen area in full, and its government says the visas it issues are, for now, valid only for Cyprus. The visa allows up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
Check one thing before anything else. If the traveller holds a valid Schengen visa for two or multiple entries, perhaps from an earlier trip to see another child in Germany or Italy, the Cyprus government says they do not need a Cyprus visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The same goes for national visas and residence permits issued by Schengen states. A single-entry Schengen visa does not count.
Family members of EU citizens who are using their EU free movement rights get easier treatment. The government's visa page says they can be served directly at the consulate as a priority, submit fewer documents and pay no visa fee, if an EU citizen is exercising free movement, the applicant counts as a family member, and the applicant is travelling with or joining that citizen.

Where do applicants from Punjab apply?
VFS Global runs Cyprus visa centres in Chandigarh and Jalandhar, and also in Gurugram and New Delhi. They open Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. Applications lodged at these centres go to the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in New Delhi on the third working day, and the High Commission decides.
Each adult attends. VFS says you must come to your appointment yourself and cannot send someone in your place, and only applicants, plus one parent or caregiver with a child under 18, may enter. A child under 14 does not have to attend; the parent applies for the child. For children, Cyprus needs the written consent of both parents.
One step to take before the appointment: tell your bank that the High Commission may contact it. VFS warns that if a bank refuses to share the required information, the application will not be processed. Our Cyprus appointment availability page shows how dates are opening up.
Which documents depend on your situation?
The common checklist is printed further down this page. For a family visit, most of the extra work sits with your host in Cyprus.
What your host prepares
- Invitation letter. VFS says it must give the host's complete address, phone number and occupation in Cyprus.
- Assumption of Responsibility form. The host completes the official form and has it certified by a notary public, VFS says. On it, the host gives their annual income and address, and states that they take full responsibility for hosting you and covering your accommodation, living costs and any medical treatment during the stay. The host also undertakes that you will not stay beyond your visa, and to inform the Cyprus authorities without delay if you do.
- A bank letter stamped by the Migration Department in Nicosia. VFS lists it as a "bank guarantee", which is not a promise of a visa: it is a bank letter covering the possible cost of repatriation. VFS gives the amount for visitors from Asian countries as €854.
The two VFS pages disagree on how long that bank letter must run: the general short-stay page says one year, while the family visit page says ten years. Ask your host to check with the Migration Department and follow the longer period if in doubt.
If you stay in the host's home, VFS's checklist treats the host's proof of sponsorship or private accommodation as your accommodation proof. If any nights are in a hotel, add a reservation confirmed by the hotel manager.

Everyone also gives an original three-month bank statement, signed and sealed, with the issuing branch's phone numbers, and photocopies of tax declarations for the last three years.
How much is the Cyprus family visit visa fee?
The visa fee is €90 for an adult and €45 for a child aged 6 to 11, as both the High Commission and VFS list it. When we checked on 14 October 2026, VFS showed ₹9,800 and ₹4,900, plus its own service fee of ₹334 per person, GST included. VFS says neither is refunded if the visa is refused or the application withdrawn. Our filing fee is shown at the top of this page.
How long does it take, and when should you apply?
VFS says processing at the High Commission normally takes 10 to 15 working days and can take longer. The Cyprus government gives 15 days as the usual decision time, extendable when the file needs a more thorough check. Files from Chandigarh and Jalandhar reach the High Commission on the third working day.
Your host's papers come first, because the notary and the Migration Department are both in Cyprus. Then:
- Apply within the window. The government's visa page allows applications from six months to 15 days before arrival.
- Allow four to six weeks before a fixed family date, such as a graduation or a wedding.
- Hold off on tickets. VFS advises not to buy them before the visa is issued; a provisional round-trip booking is enough.
Why do Cyprus family visit visas get refused for Indian applicants?
Cyprus has harmonised its visa procedures and documents with the Schengen states, its government says, so family files fail on familiar grounds.
Host papers missing or uncertified
An Assumption of Responsibility without a notary's certification, or no bank letter stamped by the Migration Department, leaves the visit without the backing Cyprus asks for. Get both before booking the appointment.
An invitation that leaves out the basics
VFS says the invitation must give the host's full address, phone number and occupation in Cyprus. A short note without them does not show who is hosting you or where.
A bank that does not cooperate
If your bank will not confirm your statement to the High Commission, VFS says the application will not be processed. Brief the branch in advance.
Doubt about the return
The host promises on the form that you will leave in time. Show the officer the same from your side: a fixed return date, a job or pension, property and family in India.

Tips for a stronger family-visit file
- Use the current form. The government's visa page links the official Assumption of Responsibility form for hosts; ask your host to use that version.
- Match the names and dates. The invitation, the host's form, your itinerary and your passport should show the same names, spellings and dates.
- Photos. Two colour photos, 35 × 45 mm, white background, signed on the back.
- Insurance. At least €30,000 of medical travel cover for the entire stay in Cyprus, from a company on the approved list.
- Passport. Valid at least three months beyond the visa; VFS advises six months from the date of entry.
- Arrival. VFS notes that migration officers at the airport can refuse entry even to visa holders, so carry the host's papers in your hand luggage.
Can my parents visit Cyprus on their Schengen visa?
Yes, if it is a valid Schengen visa for two or multiple entries, the Cyprus government says, for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. VFS's Cyprus checklist puts it simply: an applicant with a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa can enter Cyprus without a visa. So parents who visited a son in Germany last year on a multiple-entry visa may be able to visit a daughter in Cyprus this year with no new application, as long as the visa is still valid on the travel dates.
