Cyprus Tourist Visa — overview
Cyprus is an EU member but is not part of the Schengen Area. A Cyprus visa does not let you travel on to Schengen countries, and time spent here is counted separately from your Schengen 90/180 days.
Cyprus is a member of the European Union but is not part of the Schengen Area. A holiday there needs a Cypriot national visa — a Schengen visa does not cover it, and a Cypriot visa is not a way into the Schengen states.
The tourist checklist is short and specific. Two photographs, each signed on the back. An original bank statement and three years of tax declarations. And, unusually, a bank guarantee from your host in Cyprus stamped by the Migration Department appears on the general list.
The first thing to know: this is not a Schengen visa
If you are planning Cyprus as an add-on to Greece, one visa does not cover both. Cyprus is in the European Union but outside the Schengen Area, and issues its own national visa.
- A Schengen visa is not the visa for Cyprus.
- A Cypriot visa does not take you into Greece, Italy or any other Schengen state.
An itinerary that combines them needs both questions answered, and both sets of dates planned, before anything is booked.
A short list with its own habits
Cyprus asks a tourist for less paper than most Schengen states, but several items are particular to it:
- Two photographs, each signed on the back.
- An original bank statement for three months.
- Tax declarations for the last three years — one more than the usual two.
- A letter from your employer, or, if you are retired, self-employed or a homemaker, your own letter of explanation.
- A two-way flight itinerary and a hotel reservation.
- Medical travel insurance of at least EUR 30,000, valid for the whole stay in Cyprus.
The letter of explanation
For applicants without an employer, Cyprus accepts a letter in your own words. Use it properly. Say who you are, what you do, who is travelling with you, why Cyprus and for how long, how the trip is paid for, and what brings you home. For a retired couple from Punjab that letter, with the pension evidence and property papers behind it, is the heart of the file.
The host's bank guarantee
The general Cypriot checklist includes a bank guarantee from the host, stamped by the Migration Department. That is a document only a host in Cyprus can arrange. If your holiday has a host — a relative you will spend part of the trip with, or a company organising it — find out early whether they will provide it, because it is prepared in Cyprus and sets the timetable. If you are a straightforward hotel tourist, raise the point with us and we will confirm how it applies before you submit.
Single or multiple entry
The form asks which you want. If you expect to come back within the year — a cruise, a second holiday — say so and explain why. The decision is the Cypriot authorities'.

Frequently asked questions
Cyprus is in the EU but outside the Schengen Area and issues its own national visas, so plan on a Cypriot visa for this trip. A Cypriot visa, in turn, does not allow travel into the Schengen states.

Refused before?
A refusal isn't the end
