Hungary as your main Schengen destination

Hungary has steadily grown as a Schengen destination for Indian travellers — for tourism (Budapest's twin cities of Buda and Pest, the Danube, the thermal baths, Lake Balaton, Eger and the wine regions), for medical and educational reasons (Hungary is a major Indian destination for English-medium medical degrees, particularly Semmelweis Medical University in Budapest), and for business travel to the growing Central European corporate ecosystem in Budapest.

For Indian applicants the Hungarian visa system is mediated through VFS Hungary in Delhi. Consular decisions come from the Hungarian Embassy in New Delhi.

What the Hungarian visa lets you do

The Schengen short-stay (Type C) issued by Hungary covers:

  • Tourism — Budapest (Parliament, Buda Castle, Heroes' Square, the Danube bend), Lake Balaton, Eger, Tokaj wine region, Pécs and southern Hungary, the Hungarian thermal-bath circuit.
  • Business visits — meetings, conferences, trade fairs. Hungary's growing automotive, pharmaceutical, and IT sectors in Budapest and Győr drive business travel.
  • Visiting family or friends — based on a Meghívólevél (formal invitation) from a Hungarian-resident host.
  • Cultural events — Budapest Spring Festival, Sziget Festival (one of Europe's largest music festivals, August), Veszprém Cultural Capital events.
  • Medical visits — short treatment with documented appointment at a Hungarian medical facility. Hungary is known for dental tourism among European visitors.

The Type C is not for studying longer than 90 days (use the Hungarian long-stay D student visa) and is not a work authorisation.

Funds, ties, and the Hungarian officer's checklist

A Hungarian visa officer reviews the file against three core questions:

  • Is the trip genuine? Coherent itinerary, credible hotel bookings, business or family-visit documentation.
  • Are you funded? Bank statements showing 3-6 months of consistent salary or business activity. Indicative funds: around EUR 45-65 per day for the Hungarian leg plus return travel.
  • Will you leave at the end of the stay? Employment, business, property, family ties, prior travel history.

Insurance, multi-entry, and refusals

The Schengen mandatory EUR 30,000 medical insurance is strictly checked. Without a compliant certificate the file is refused on procedural grounds.

Hungarian consulates issue multi-entry visas at their discretion. First-time Schengen applicants typically receive single-entry; clean prior Schengen travel qualifies for one-year or longer multi-entry under the EU Visa Code 2020 reforms.

For refusals, Hungary offers a formal appeal route. In practice, for most refused Indian applicants the better path is a fresh application addressing the refusal grounds.

Indian-applicant jurisdiction for the Hungarian Embassy

The Hungarian Embassy in New Delhi covers all of India for Schengen and long-stay visa applications. There is no separate Hungarian consulate elsewhere in India, which means all Indian applicants — regardless of state — submit through VFS Hungary in Delhi. The Hungarian Embassy serves a relatively concentrated geographical scope compared to consulates with multiple Indian offices like Italy, Germany, or Netherlands.

Hungarian cover-letter expectations

Hungarian consulates are reasonably detail-oriented on cover letters. A strong Hungarian visitor-visa cover letter covers:

  • Purpose of visit stated clearly — tourism, business, family visit, conference, cultural event, medical (dental tourism is a recognised Hungarian draw).
  • Day-by-day itinerary — Budapest is typically the primary destination; for trips beyond Budapest, specify Lake Balaton, Eger, Tokaj, Pécs, or Danube Bend days.
  • Who pays for the trip — self-funded with bank statements, sponsored by family, or sponsored by employer for business trips.
  • Ties to India — employment with leave approval, business documents, property, family responsibilities.
  • Travel history — prior Schengen, US, UK, Canada visas demonstrate established travel patterns.

We draft Hungarian cover letters with you, tuned to the specific trip purpose.

Sziget Festival, Budapest Spring Festival, Veszprém events

For applicants attending major Hungarian cultural events — particularly Sziget Festival (Budapest, mid-August, one of Europe's largest music festivals), Budapest Spring Festival (April), Café Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival, Veszprém-Balaton Cultural Capital programmes — the event registration is a strong supporting document for the cover-letter purpose. Sziget Festival typically sees a surge in Indian Schengen applications in May-July; book VFS Hungary appointments 8-10 weeks ahead.

Dental tourism and medical visits

Hungary, particularly Budapest and the western Hungarian city of Sopron, has been a significant dental tourism destination for European visitors for decades. Indian visitors are a smaller but growing share. For dental or medical tourism visits, the cover letter should reference:

  • Treatment plan and confirmation from the Hungarian clinic.
  • Estimated cost and prepayment evidence where relevant.
  • Travel insurance explicitly noting medical-tourism coverage if applicable (separate from the standard Schengen EUR 30,000 insurance).
  • Accommodation linked to the clinic location.

The Hungarian consulate distinguishes medical tourism (acceptable on Type C) from longer-term medical treatment (which may require a different visa category).

Seasonal considerations

Hungarian Schengen volume from India peaks in summer (May-August) for tourism and Sziget Festival, and again in December for Christmas markets. Off-peak (October-November, February-March) tends to see the fastest VFS appointment availability and processing.
