Denmark Family & Friends Visit Visa — overview
A Danish family-and-friends visit visa is a short-stay Schengen visa (Type C): up to 90 days in any 180-day period, to stay with someone living in Denmark. The Royal Danish Embassy in New Delhi decides it, and the form and fee are completed online before you reach the VFS counter.
Denmark is one of the few Schengen countries that publishes the money figure. You need DKK 350 for each day if you are staying in your host's home — and your own stamped bank statement is required even when your host is paying for everything.

The number most families do not know to check
Denmark publishes what "enough money" means. Staying in your host's home, you must have DKK 350 for every day of the visit; in a hotel, DKK 500 a day — plus the fare home. The embassy's checklist adds that failing to show it may lead to refusal.
Do the arithmetic before anything else. A 60-day stay with your daughter is DKK 21,000, and it has to be visible in an original bank statement in your own name, stamped and signed by the bank, covering three months.
"My child is paying" is not an exemption
This is an easy requirement to miss. The checklist says the personal bank statement is required from all applicants regardless of sponsorship. Your host's invitation and support strengthen the file; they do not stand in for your own account. If the account is modest, that is fine as long as it is genuine and steady — what cannot be explained is a large sum that arrived last week.
Your host's part is done online
Rather than a letter, the embassy recommends your host complete the VU2 invitation form on nyidanmark.dk. With it they send:
- a copy of their passport, and
- a copy of their Danish residence permit card.
If you are staying with them, that also settles accommodation — the checklist accepts proof of private accommodation from the host in place of a hotel booking.
Proving the relationship
- Visiting your spouse: a copy of the marriage certificate if your passport does not show your marital status; a ration-card copy where applicable.
- Visiting close relatives: a certificate proving the family relationship.
Names should match across the certificate, the VU2 invitation and both passports. Where a name was changed after marriage or is spelled differently on an older document, we deal with that in the cover letter rather than leave the officer to notice it.
Two Danish habits worth knowing
- Do not buy the ticket. The embassy recommends against purchasing a plane ticket before the visa is approved. Submit a reservation.
- Three days for missing papers. If something is absent at VFS, you have three days — the signing day counts as the first — to bring it. After that the embassy decides on what it has.

Online application form
Completed on applyvisa.um.dk, then printed and signed by the applicant.
Visa fee receipt
Paid online; print the receipt from applyvisa.um.dk and bring it with the file.
One photograph
Under six months old, colour, white background, 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm, a good likeness.
Passport
Valid at least three months beyond your intended stay in the Schengen area, with at least two blank pages. Any other kind of travel document must be valid for six months.
Previous Schengen visas and stamps
Copies of earlier Schengen visas and entry and exit stamps from your previous passports.
Cover letter
From you: purpose of travel, duration, names of anyone travelling with you, and transport and accommodation details.
Invitation from your host
The embassy recommends the host completes the online VU2 invitation form on nyidanmark.dk.
Your host's legal residence
A copy of the host's passport and their Danish residence permit card.
Proof of relationship
Visiting a spouse in Denmark: a copy of the marriage certificate if your passport does not show your marital status, and a ration-card copy where applicable. Visiting close relatives: a certificate proving the family relationship.
Travel medical insurance
Valid for all Schengen countries, at least EUR 30,000, clearly dated to cover the whole trip including arrival and departure days.
Flight reservation — not a purchased ticket
Return or round-trip reservation. The embassy recommends you do not buy the ticket before the visa is approved.
Proof of accommodation
If you are staying with family or a friend: proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation from the host. Otherwise hotel or rental reservations, for every Schengen state you visit.
Personal bank statement — from every applicant
Original, in your name, last three months, stamped and signed by the bank. Required regardless of sponsorship, and it must show DKK 350 a day for a private stay or DKK 500 a day for a hotel, plus the return journey.
Evidence of income
Income-tax return acknowledgements for the last two assessment years, plus payslips, contract and leave letter if employed; company registration with GST number if self-employed; pension statements if retired.
For minors
Birth certificate copy, copies of both parents' passports, and notarised consent from any parent not travelling.
