The Iceland family visit visa is a Schengen short-stay visa (type C) for staying with relatives or friends who live in Iceland, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You apply online at visa.government.is, then hand in the signed printout, the Schengen form and your documents at VFS Global, which has Iceland centres in Jalandhar and Chandigarh. The Embassy of Iceland in New Delhi decides, usually within 15 calendar days of receiving a complete file.

Your host sends Iceland's invitation letter and, if paying, the financial responsibility form. When the host bears your costs, your statement must show 4,000 ISK a day rather than the 8,000 ISK hotel figure.

Do Indians need a visa to visit family in Iceland, and which one?

Yes. To stay with a son, daughter, spouse, sibling or friend living in Iceland, an Indian passport holder needs the Schengen short-stay visa, type C, which VFS lists under "Family or Friends visit". Each visit can last up to 90 days, and the total in any 180 days cannot pass 90 across the Schengen area. Iceland's process has two halves: an online application on visa.government.is, then a file handed in at VFS Global. The Embassy of Iceland in New Delhi decides.

Family visits get one concession in Iceland's money rule. If your host bears the costs of your stay, your bank statement needs to show 4,000 ISK a day instead of the 8,000 ISK a day expected for a hotel stay. The rest of the file is about proving who your host is, how you are related, and why you will come home.

Where do applicants from Punjab apply?

Close to home. VFS Global runs Iceland visa centres in Jalandhar and Chandigarh, so most Punjabi families do not need to travel to Delhi at all; Gurugram and New Delhi are the other northern options. There are further Iceland centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Cochin, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Puducherry and Pune. Whichever you choose, the Embassy in New Delhi decides, because Iceland issues visas from its own embassy there through VFS, not through another country.

How a family file moves:

  • Each traveller applies online on visa.government.is, picking India and the VFS city. Print each confirmation and sign it.
  • Book the appointment for everyone at the same centre. Between March and June the Embassy warns that appointments can take several days to get.
  • At the centre, hand in the signed online printout, the signed Schengen form with one photo, the passport and the checklist documents, and give fingerprints. VFS staff tick the checklist and you sign its last page.

Which documents depend on your situation?

The usual papers are listed further down the page. For a family visit, Iceland's single Embassy checklist adds the host's side and the relationship.

What your host in Iceland provides:

  • The letter of invitation from the host, using the form published on island.is. Iceland's general list asks for an invitation from the host (the reference person) whenever the trip is to visit family or friends.
  • The host's financial responsibility form, also on island.is, if the host is covering your costs, with the host's payslips or bank statement. Iceland's general list on island.is treats this as an alternative to your own bank statement, but the Embassy in New Delhi's checklist asks every applicant for their own statement regardless of sponsorship. Follow the Embassy's stricter rule and send both.
  • Proof of sponsorship or private accommodation, if you will stay in the host's home.

Your own side. Every applicant gives an original bank statement for the last three months with all pages stamped and signed by the bank, even when the host pays. The account may be yours or your sponsor's; a sponsor's statement must come with a signed sponsorship letter and a signed copy of the sponsor's passport. Add ITR acknowledgements for the last two assessment years. Retired parents add pension statements for three months and proof of regular income from property or a business; employees add pay slips, the contract and a leave letter.

Grandchildren and children under 18. A child travelling with one parent needs the other parent's consent, certified by a notary, or proof of sole custody; a child travelling without parents needs notarised consent from both. Copies of both parents' passports go in too.

How much is the Iceland family visit visa fee for Indians?

The visa fee for a family or friends visit is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, which the VFS fee table showed as ₹9,810 and ₹4,905 on 14 October 2026; under-6s pay no visa fee under the EU Visa Code. VFS charges ₹3,161 (€29) per person on top, GST included. Pay at the centre by cash or card; rupee amounts follow the exchange rate of the day, and no fee is returned after a refusal. How long does it take, and when should you apply?

Normally 15 calendar days, counted once the Embassy has received the file from VFS with every requested document, so the courier from Jalandhar or Chandigarh is extra. An interview request or a call for more papers extends it, and the busy months are slower. Iceland's portal notes the Embassy may also phone applicants about statements made in their application.

Planning a visit:

  • Earliest: six months before you travel.
  • Busy season: March to June. The Embassy asks travellers in that period to apply as early as possible.
  • Latest: VFS suggests at least two weeks before travel; for a parent's long visit, give it a month.
  • After the appointment: anything VFS marks as missing must reach the Embassy by email within 5 calendar days, or the case is decided without it.

Why do Iceland family visit visas get refused for Indian applicants?

Iceland applies the EU Visa Code. Family files tend to fail on proof rather than intention, and these are the usual gaps.

Relationship papers missing or mismatched

Iceland asks for proof of the family relationship when you visit close relatives, and a marriage certificate or proof of cohabitation for a spouse. A missing certificate, or names spelt differently across documents, leaves the purpose of the visit unproved.

The host pays, but the file does not show it

The lower 4,000 ISK daily rate applies when a third party bears the costs of the stay. If the host is paying but the file lacks their financial responsibility form and payslips or bank statement, nothing proves it, and your own statement has to carry the whole trip.

Weak reasons to return

The Visa Code lets an officer refuse when your intention to leave cannot be ascertained. A parent whose children all live abroad should show the home, land, pension and family that remain in India, and a return date that fits them.

Missing papers sent after 5 days

You sign at VFS that documents emailed late may not count and that the outcome may be a refusal. Send anything outstanding to both Embassy addresses within 5 calendar days, as PDFs, with your passport name as the subject.

Each standard Schengen refusal ground is explained on our Schengen refusal reasons page. After a refusal you can appeal to Iceland's Visa Appeals Board within 30 days of the decision, writing in Icelandic and paying a €300 fee, but the Board considers only the documents in the original file.

Tips for a stronger file

  • Agree the dates with your host first. Their invitation, your flight reservation (with PNR and your name), the insurance and your cover letter should all show the same arrival and departure.
  • Decide who pays, on paper. If the host covers your stay, include their financial responsibility form and payslips or bank statement; your own statement still goes in.
  • Do the sum. Three weeks with your son, hosted, is 84,000 ISK at 4,000 ISK a day. Make sure that is visible across the three months of statements.
  • Bring the insurance policy. The card alone is not accepted; the policy must cover all Schengen countries, the whole stay and at least €30,000. See our Schengen travel insurance explainer.
  • Stamp every page. The bank must stamp and sign each page of the statement.
  • One cover letter per traveller. Purpose of the visit, how long, who travels with you, and where you will stay.

Can a family visit to Iceland be extended if something goes wrong?

Only in genuine emergencies, and never past 90 days in 180. Iceland extends a visa only when its validity is under 90 days and something beyond your control keeps you there. Its own examples fit family visits closely: a close relative living in a Schengen state suddenly becoming seriously ill or dying counts as a humanitarian reason, and staying on because a family member's condition worsened after surgery counts as a serious personal reason. A cancelled flight is force majeure.

You apply by email to visa@utn.is with a copy of your passport and visa, your travel medical insurance, a letter explaining the request and, where relevant, a medical certificate. There is no fee for force majeure or humanitarian reasons; an extension for serious personal reasons costs €30 if approved.     Valid at least 3 months from the date you leave the Schengen area, issued within the previous 10 years, with at least 2 blank pages. Copies of earlier Schengen stamps if available.

  • Proof of relationship

    Visiting a spouse: marriage certificate or proof of cohabitation. Visiting close relatives: proof of the family relationship, such as birth certificates.

    The host's proof of sponsorship or private accommodation if you stay with them, or hotel reservations, for each Schengen country.

  • Travel medical insurance policy

    Valid in all Schengen countries, at least €30,000, showing the period of validity, coverage area and the whole visit. A card alone is not accepted.

  • Flight reservation

    Round-trip reservation showing the PNR number and the traveller's name.

  • Personal bank statement

    Original, last three months, every page stamped and signed by the bank, showing 4,000 ISK a day if the host pays or 8,000 ISK a day in a hotel. Required regardless of sponsorship.

  • Income tax returns and occupation proof

    ITR acknowledgements for two assessment years, plus pension statements if retired, or pay slips, contract and leave letter if employed.

  • Cover letter

    Purpose of the visit, duration, the names of anyone travelling with you, and your transport and accommodation details.

  • Documents for a child

    Notarised consent of the parent not travelling, or proof of sole custody; notarised consent of both parents if travelling alone; copies of both parents' passports.

  • No. Iceland's checklist states that an insurance card is not sufficient. Bring the full travel medical insurance policy, valid in all Schengen countries, with cover of at least €30,000 for risks such as accident, illness and medical evacuation, clearly showing the period of validity, the coverage area and the whole visit, including the arrival and departure dates.

  • Email it within 5 calendar days of your VFS appointment to both visa.nde@utn.is and visa@utn.is. Use your name exactly as in your passport as the subject, include your passport number and VFS city, and attach PDFs only. Documents that arrive late may not be considered, and the decision may be a delay or a refusal.

  • Possibly, after a first visit. Iceland says multiple-entry visas are generally not granted on a first application. Family members of Icelandic or EEA/EFTA citizens, and family members of non-EU nationals legally living in Schengen states, are among those who can show a need to travel regularly. You must also show lawful use of earlier visas and a genuine intention to leave. Such visas run from six months to five years.

  • Possibly, if the visa's validity is under 90 days. Iceland lists the sudden serious illness or death of a close relative living in a Schengen state as a humanitarian reason for an extension, and caring for a family member whose condition worsens after surgery as a serious personal reason. Email visa@utn.is with your passport and visa copies, insurance, a letter and a medical certificate. Serious personal reasons cost €30.

  • Up to six months before the trip. The Embassy of Iceland asks people travelling between March and June to apply as early as possible, because VFS appointments can take several days to get in that season. VFS suggests applying at least two weeks before travel, but for a parent's longer visit a month or more is safer.

  • Yes, within 30 days from the date of the decision. Email a written appeal in Icelandic to the Visa Appeals Board at appeals@utn.is, quoting the ISL reference number from the refusal letter, with your name, nationality, the refusal date and proof of the €300 appeal fee. The Board decides only on the documents in the original file, so missing proof is better fixed by reapplying.
