Slovenia Family & Friends Visit Visa — overview
A Slovenian family-and-friends visit visa is a short-stay Schengen visa (Type C): up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Slovenia uses one checklist for every travel purpose, with a short section for visits to family and friends.
Three of its ground rules are worth knowing before you gather anything. Supporting documents must be translated into English or Slovenian and filed in the embassy's order. Originals are shown at your visa-centre appointment. And the embassy returns nothing to you except your passport — so whatever you hand over, you will not see again.

The embassy keeps everything except your passport
One sentence on Slovenia's checklist changes how you should prepare the file: "The Embassy does not return any other documents to the applicant besides the passport."
It is common to hand over original birth certificates, property papers and bank letters. With Slovenia, anything you submit stays there. The checklist's own instruction is the way through: originals must be presented during the appointment at the visa application centre — presented, not surrendered. Bring the originals to be seen, and submit copies. We prepare a labelled copy set for submission and keep your originals in a separate folder for the counter.
Translate, and keep the order
Supporting documents need to be translated into English or Slovenian and presented in the following order. For applicants from Punjab that usually means the documents issued in Punjabi or Hindi — a jamabandi, a marriage certificate from a gurdwara, a village-level certificate. Get them translated before the appointment, and assemble the file in the sequence the checklist prints.
Your host's letter of guarantee
For a stay with family or friends, proof of lodging is "an invitation/sponsorship form from the host — letter of guarantee." It is a form, not a free-hand letter; your host completes it in Slovenia. Add a certificate proving the family relationship if you are visiting relatives, and a marriage certificate if you are married and your passport does not say so.
Do not buy the ticket
"It is not recommended to purchase flight tickets before receiving a visa decision." Submit a reservation.
Fingerprints: you may already be in the system
The checklist records an exemption where fingerprints were collected for an earlier application and entered in the VIS less than 59 months ago. If you have held a Schengen visa in the last five years, say so — it can spare an elderly parent a second set of biometrics.
How long it takes
Up to 15 calendar days once all documents are in, and up to 45 days where additional checks are needed. The embassy may also call you for an interview or ask for further documents.

Documents you need
Application form
One form, completed, dated and signed by the applicant.
Passport and copies
A copy of the passport, including the biodata pages and any foreign passports issued.
Travel medical insurance
Valid across the whole Schengen area for the entire trip, minimum EUR 30,000, covering emergency medical expenses. For a multiple-entry visa: cover for the first trip, and you sign the declaration on the last page of the form acknowledging the need for insurance on later stays.
Transport
Flight reservation, plus intra-Schengen flights, train itinerary or car rental if you visit several states.
Proof of lodging — the host's letter of guarantee
For a private stay: an invitation or sponsorship form from your host (letter of guarantee). Otherwise a document from the hotel or establishment providing accommodation.
Proof of financial means
Original personal bank statement for the last three months, stamped and signed by the bank, with evidence of occupation — for an employee, including the employer's statement approving the leave.
Marriage certificate, where needed
If you are married and your passport does not show it; a ration-card copy where applicable.
Certificate of family relationship
If you are visiting relatives.
Translations
Supporting documents translated into English or Slovenian, presented in the order the checklist gives.
For minors
Notarised consent of any parent not travelling.
