Lithuania Family & Friends Visit Visa — overview
A Lithuanian family-and-friends visit visa is a short-stay Schengen visa (Type C): up to 90 days in any 180-day period, decided by the Embassy of Lithuania. Its checklist was revised in May 2026.
Lithuania has moved the host's side of the application online. Your relative does not write you a letter — they submit an invitation electronically through Lithuania's migration system, MIGRIS, and you quote its number on your application. If you are relying on them for accommodation or money, that has to be stated in the MIGRIS invitation itself.
The invitation is a number, not a letter
Lithuania has taken the host's letter out of the envelope. Item 4 on its checklist is a blank line: "Number of MIGRIS invitation letter ________".
Your relative or friend submits an invitation electronically through Lithuania's migration service, MIGRIS (EMigris), for you to stay temporarily in Lithuania. They pass you its number, and that number goes on your application. It is required whenever you rely not on your own means but on the commitment of an inviter or sponsor — for where you will sleep, or for your living and return costs.
Two consequences follow.
- Accommodation must be inside it. The checklist says that if you are staying with family or a friend, the private accommodation "has to be mentioned in MIGRIS invitation letter." A separate note from your host does not do that job.
- Your host starts first. The MIGRIS submission is made in Lithuania, by them. Nothing on your side can be completed until the number exists.
Your form is online too
The application form is completed in EMigris — choose your nationality, select the Schengen visa form, create a login — then printed and signed.
Affidavits are not evidence
The checklist says it without qualification: "Affidavit will not be considered as a document of evidence by the Embassy of Lithuania." Whatever you would usually swear on stamp paper — a relationship, a source of funds, a name variation — needs an issued document instead.
A window with two edges
Lithuania sets both limits: apply not earlier than six months and not later than 15 working days before travel. Inside that, the embassy processes within 15 calendar days of the file arriving at the visa section, and VFS needs up to two working days to deliver it; the embassy's public holidays do not count. It adds that a booked flight ticket does not result in preferred processing, and that you will not have your passport while the application is being examined.
Incomplete files are refused, not returned
"The visa section is not obliged to ask for submittal of documents already mentioned on this list before denying an application." Submit the whole list the first time.
Photographs and insurance
Two photographs, high definition, face filling at least 80% of the frame. Insurance from the approved list of Indian insurers, minimum EUR 30,000 — and for a multi-entry visa, cover for the first trip is enough.

Documents you need
Application form — completed in EMigris
The Schengen form is completed by logging in to EMigris: choose your nationality, select the Schengen visa application form and create a login. Print and sign it.
Two photographs
Recent (under six months), high-definition, 35 × 45 mm, colour, white background, with the face covering at least 80% of the frame.
Passport
Issued within the last 10 years, valid more than three months after the scheduled return, at least two empty pages. Non-Indian nationals living in India also present their residence permit.
MIGRIS invitation number
The number of the invitation your host submitted electronically through MIGRIS (EMigris) — required when you rely on the inviter, rather than your own means, for accommodation and/or for subsistence and return costs.
Travel medical insurance — approved insurers
From the approved list of Indian travel insurance companies; all Schengen countries; at least EUR 30,000; dated for the whole trip including arrival and departure days. Multi-entry applicants need cover for the first trip.
Transport and itinerary
Flight reservations to and from the Schengen area, plus intra-Schengen travel if you visit several states.
Proof of accommodation
If you are staying with family or a friend, the private accommodation has to be mentioned in the MIGRIS invitation. Otherwise hotel or rental reservations for each state visited.
Cover letter
Signed by you: purpose of travel, duration, names of anyone accompanying you, and transport and accommodation details.
Proof of financial means and occupation
Bank statements, income-tax acknowledgements and proof of occupation; if employed, the employer's statement approving leave; if self-employed, company registration with GST number.
